If the Bengals win the Super Bowl at the end of this season, I'd be perfectly content paying the QB that led them to a world Championship 19 mil per.

Did you really just say, for all intents and purposes, that winning the Super Bowl would be the "worst case scenario" for this team? Really?:L

Actually, no I didn't. Read a little more carefully. Dalton sucking and his contract ballooning would be the worst case scenario. Furthermore, if I were referring to winning a SB, I probably would have said something like, "winning a SB", and not "multiple playoff games".

Oh, and lol @ "for all intents and purposes". Translation: "I'm about to create an argument out of thin air and apply it to you".

And to be fair, if we win the Super Bowl I don't care if we suck for 10 years.

Hell, I put up with 15 years of sucking after LOSING a Super Bowl.

If we win one before I die I'll be amazed. Actually, the celebration would probably hasten my demise.

Have you seen the pay schedule for the escalators somewhere?

If so I would love to be able to see them, as I have not as of yet. However, since you are so sure that if he wins a playoff game then the rest of the contract is guaranteed, I assume you have seen the payment schedule for the escalators.

I assumed based off what reports were saying, he has to keep winning playoff games year after year to keep building up those escalators. So, thank you advance for the link that defines this schedule. I am not doubting you by the way, just would love to see the schedule as I have not, just assumed from reports.

Bottom line, IMO, is the contract itself is good. If he wins, and the team wins, and does will in the playoffs, he gets paid. In 2-3 years this contract will rank in the bottom half of the league due to the cap increasing as much as it has/expected to increase.

What it comes down to, I think, is either you can't stand Dalton and are pissed he got signed long-term (no matter the breakdown of how he's paid) or you can live with him as the QB knowing the contract is team friendly.

As I said all last year...Dalton is going nowhere, so this is a good scenario for the team. Decent/good contract, and they keep the guy they wanted. Like it or not, he's here for a bit longer.

I understand the logic, but it's a little off..... AJ is under contract for 2 more seasons - The Bengals had a 5th year option that all first rounders have in the new CBA. Dalton could be franchised for 1 year before potentially having to franchise AJ.

That said, they have a ton of cap space right now, so they had to give it to one of the guys that will come up. Dalton actually makes the most sense because they have options with AJ and Burfict.

You are correct. I forgot they optioned the 5th year, giving them through next year on his contract.

Burfict, I believe, is in his last year, so none-the-less, it still helps to have that tag.

I think Burfict will be restricted if he doesn't get extended. The Bengals should slap a first round tender on him..... Cheaper than the franchise tag for unrestricted FAs, but similar in strategy. In two years, they're looking at both AJ and Tez being unrestricted.

With how the Dalton deal shook out, and the expected raise in the cap, there is zero reason to wait...Pay the guy and move on.

I agree.... And despite what Hobs might say, I think they have plenty of cash on hand to cut a deal with Tez right now. The guy is making a minuscule salary at a position that comes with plenty of risk of injury. Throw some money at him and his agents and you might get a nice price for a 5 or 6 year deal.

Agreed.

Let's hope they can get it done without it being an issue.

If the bengals cut dalton, here are the cap ramifications:

Year (if cut) Dead Money Cap Savings
2014 $17,573,036 ($8,513,973)
2015 $9,600,000 $0
2016 $7,200,000 $5,900,000
2017 $4,800,000 $10,900,000
2018 $2,400,000 $13,900,000
2019 $0 $16,200,000
2020 $0 $17,700,000

So, after 2016, they actually SAVE money if they cut him. It's basically a 2 year deal that says "win in the playoffs" or you don't get paid. And again, with the cap increases that are expected, even if he maxes out his contract, he'll end up in the bottom half of the league in year 3-4, and if he plays so well that he wants it restructured, then that can only mean that he's winning in the post-season consistently by that time.

Hard to fault the Bengals on this deal (outside of finding a different QB a year ago leading into this year).

Except, oh...you know...making the guy actually earn an extension. When more and more analysts are questioning Dalton's abilities finally seeing what some of us have for years, we're extending him.

And no future plans require having drafted a QB a year ago. It would have been ideal, but high rounds QBs are starting right away. No reason ties couldn't have been cut next offseason.

We were talking about paying Burfict. Thanks for playing though.
