psst...cal...HE WASN'T SIGNED TO BE AN OPENER.If this was an opening rather than a start, we would be saying he was OK. 3.2 only giving up 2. Not HORRIBLE.

2 runs in 3.1 IP. Not what we want from him as his average outing, sure. But if this is his definition of a shit-the-bed, absolute blowup, I will take it.psst...cal...THEY ALL ARE SIGNED TO HELP WIN GAMES.
Disco wasn't very helpful yesterday.
Sure, if all you're looking at is ER and IP. WHIP? hits/outs recorded?2 runs in 3.1 IP. Not what we want from him as his average outing, sure. But if this is his definition of a shit-the-bed, absolute blowup, I will take it.
Runs and IP (or, ERA) is the ONLY thing that matters at the end of the day. When he left the game, the game was still in contention. It was not a “looking at tomorrow” game.Sure, if all you're looking at is ER and IP. WHIP? hits/outs recorded?
He sucked. No good way to spin a 10 out, 8 hit performance.
Put another way: will he have a shorter outing all year long? Unlikely.
He was lucky it was only 2 runs. Bed was shat, we just changed the sheets quickly.

Your problem, as always, is you have only two categories: great job and total shitshow. You don't allow for rough starts that don't put the game out of reach (like this one).Sure, if all you're looking at is ER and IP. WHIP? hits/outs recorded?

I'd say a 4. Not good. Not a zero, but not good. He stressed the bullpen. Fortunately, its early in the season and they're relatively fresh. If he had gone 4 with 2 ER and say 5 hits...then I'd say it was a 5 or a 6. Passable.Your problem, as always, is you have only two categories: great job and total shitshow. On a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best) yesterday was about a 5. One run was on a sac fly. That's not a bed-shitting.
End of the day, what does it matter how many hits he gives up? Giving up 2 solo HRs is the same as giving up 10 singles that only resulted in 2 runs.I'd say a 4. Not good. Not a zero, but not good. oh, you've seen me post on the 2 performances. This wasn't that.End of the day, what does it matter how many hits he gives up? Giving up 2 solo HRs is the same as giving up 10 singles that only resulted in 2 runs.
I would agree, though, that on msg’s 1-10 scale the start was probably closer to a 4 than a 5. I just don’t act like it was a 2 when it was, in fact, a 4.
No. When someone actually have a “2” performance, you act like it was really a “-1” performanceoh, you've seen me post on the 2 performances. This wasn't that.
The other thing you'll need to recalibrate is how many innings are needed for a good outing. As the game evolves to basically all bullpen all the time, starters simply aren't needed/expected to go deep into games. They don't WANT them to, because the 3rd time through the order is where bad stuff happens.I'd say a 4. Not good. Not a zero, but not good. He stressed the bullpen. Agreed. 5 innings is now a good outing. The other thing you'll need to recalibrate is how many innings are needed for a good outing. So 5 innings is the new 6 innings. 5 and dive is now 4 and dive. Hell 8 innings is like a shutout LOL
