So how good was Kharlamov? The guy they all wear 17 for.

He was having a hell of a series until Bobby Clarke broke his ankle with a wicked two-hander. Him and Alexander Yakishev (sp?) really stood out for the Russkies.

/that guy in goal (Tretiak) was pretty good too.

Some have said Clarke got away with a lot of stuff in Philly because of his teammates. Seems to me he knew who to go after & simply did what he had to do against Russia.

At the time, Clarke was hailed as a Canadian hero (obviously, different viewpoints back in '72).

We had peasant tv at the time (no lie, I think we had 4 channels to choose from) and I think Michael Landon was still 'Little Joe' on Bonanza back in '72

Well it wasn't any different when the Russians visited Philly. Kharlamov got hit & the Russians left the ice. They returned of course when they were told they wouldn't be paid if they didn't finish the game.:D:

I think Boston drafted Kharlamov's kid. It didn't work out. Too bad for him.

Game 6 "The Tap"

Game Six was a Canadian 3-2 victory. Prior to the game, the Canadians became upset over a shipment of beer that they believed the Soviets had deliberately "lost" at the airport.[1] Following the game, the Canadians complained that the German referees (the same ones who refereed the controversial Sweden game) were biased, since Canada was handed 31 minutes in penalties during the game, while the Soviets only received four.[2] Paul Henderson scored what turned out to be the winning goal at 6:36 of the second period.

This game also saw the most controversial play of the entire series. In the second period, Bobby Clarke deliberately slashed Valeri Kharlamov's ankle, fracturing it. Years later, John Ferguson, the assistant coach of Team Canada, was quoted as saying "I called Clarke over to the bench, looked over at Kharlamov and said, 'I think he needs a tap on the ankle.'I didn't think twice about it. It was Us versus Them. And Kharlamov was killing us. I mean, somebody had to do it."[3] Kharlamov was the Soviets' best forward, and although he played the rest of the game, he missed Game Seven and was largely ineffectual in Game Eight.

The Tap had nothing to do with Hockey. Its because them ruskies stole our fucking Beer.....

I blame John Ferguson and his neanderthal coaching antics for the Kharlamov incident.

He took a young and easily influenced young player like Clarke and told him to "tap"(code word for break) his ankle.

amazing in rewatching that series (I was not yet 2 when it happened) was that Kharlamov never even fell down when Clarke broke his ankle.

it was 1972... to bitch about that Tap now is well sad.... it was 1972 not many a hockey fan outside Russia cared about what Clarke did. 72. not 2011... imagine if Clarke did that in the Finals this last season? he would have been banned for 2 years

Hell, I remember when TV first came to Western Canada. One channel, CBC. As for the 72 Summit Series, I was on the short list to referee in that series. I was living in the US and I got a call from one of the guys who had been selected to work the Series. He asked me if I had been called to work it. I told him I hadn't and I knew that even if I was selected, the USSR would have blocked it because I was a Canadian Citizen.

I have to admit, I loved those Canada vs USSR series. Isn't that when the Canada thanked Russia for inventing the game of hockey?
