Would you rather have a ~20 year career and A. have 3000+ career hits, or B. have a career .300+ batting average?

(Well, to clear this up a bit, we’re talking a successful starter’s career and the difference would be something like:
A. 3017, .287 or
B. 2784, .304)

So we're talking Palmero vs Griffey? I'd take Griffey.

I don't have any examples of players in the 3000 club, but Buckner came close (2715) and he was a 1B/corner OFer with a lifetime line of .289/.321/.408 (100 OPS+). That's pretty pedestrian IMO.

Juan Pierre also managed 2200+ and he was pretty average.

Not gonna get into Brock (I don't think he's a HOFer, but he is not pedestrian), but I think Biggio deserved enshrinement. A little borderline, but I'd put him in.

I suppose it's pretty hard for players to not be very productive with 3000+ hits or a .300+ BA, but a .300 BA (especially nowadays) usually comes with some power and OBP skills.
Honestly didn't know Buckner got that close.

It's definitely different for a First Baseman. Or if a guy hangs on forever as a DH.

Brooks Robinson and Omar's vizquel came close. But I don't think either hung around because of what they brought to a lineup.

Player "B" had 1,355 less AB's than player "A". Using those numbers, if they had equal AB's, player "B" would have had "A" beaten easily.
A. 3017 hits, .287 average
B. 3195 hits, .304 average

Glad to see that you Sox fans can mention his name.

As a Steelers fan, I still can't mention this guys name.

You fudged the numbers just enough to make it SEEM like you are not asking a loaded question. But I think it is obvious you are trying to equate Palmeiro to Griffey.

Palmeiro was very good, but never great, and was only very good for so long because of an outside influence. Griffey was GREAT, but was limited due to a series of injuries. And that does not begin to factor in the defensive differences between the two.

No sane fan would ever try to compare Palmeiro to Griffey.

Thanks for clearing that up ... I knew he had an agenda. Palmeiro was a good hitter, Griffey Jr. was a great ballplayer!!

I thought I did answer it simply. I want the 20 years of big league paycheck oh and the 3000 hits.
Then that comment wasnt for you, was it? Unless this last comment of yours shows paranoia. Ha ha.

.300+BA over 20 years and 2700+ hits is going to get you a fat paycheck.

20 years worth of paydays. I'll take that every time regardless of stat line.

Well, if it's 20 years of paydays either way, that's a different story. I'll take the higher average. How many HRs did I hit in my illustrious career?

I don't think he used PEDs, but he never had to bat against pitcher who were using PEDs

My question about being a juicer was in reference to the scenario for this thread. Not about Hank.

As for me personally, I will not give credit to a known juicer as the HR King.

I have the opinion (because I really don't know) that if Barry Bonds was using PEDs (and I think he was), almost every other player in baseball at the time was using (thus leveling the playing field). MLB should have regulated it better, now the Steroid Boys are paying for it when I blame MLB.

I agree MLB should have put a stop to it early on. However, I don't buy the level playing field as justification. The "Everybody else was doing it" excuse didn't get out of trouble with my dad and I don't accept it either.

Funny how football and baseball look at cheating.
Football fans generally don't care if a player is juicing. Baseball players that juiced are considered scum and it ruins their reputation. However, if a batter gets caught with a corked bat or a pitcher gets caught doctoring a ball, its laughed about and life goes on. In football, a 1/2 pound of PSI in a football is a felony.

pitching is tricky though... YOU WANT the pitcher to use any substance they can to improve their grip... its the movement that you don't want them to use a foreign substance to improve... But how do you police that line??
