Looks like the NHL board of governors have given the go ahead on 3 on 3 overtime.

Hopefully this leads to less god damn shootouts.

My question is this.

Why not 4 on 4 for regulation?
1-Opens up the ice
2-less players on payroll-meaning better talent all around for each team

Makes sense to me,which is why Bettman, and board would not do it IMO.

I still don't have an issue with a tie game, the bigger issue I have is not having all games worth the same number of points. In the old days, you were rewarded for beating a team in 60 minutes with all the points, if the game was tied, you shared the 2 points. Oh well, ignore me, I'm just an old curmudgeon.

I'd be ok with it if they also went down to one ref in overtime.

/and a dry scrape at the halfway mark

I'd be okay if they dry scraped one ref at the end of overtime...

I'm old school too.
If tied after regulation- 1 pt each.No need for ot-play to win in regulation!

And on my short list for Bettman's successors.

I say just play (and play hockey - 5 on 5) until someone wins. These are multi-millionaire athletes. I don't want to hear how they might get tired. And then 2 points for a win. Nothing else.

Nhl wanted 4 minutes 4 on 4 then 3 minutes 3 on 3
NHLPA said no to 7 minutes OT. Too taxing on players
So they agreed to 5 minutes 3 on 3

Anything is better than the shootout. Ask any Flyer fan on these boards. I'd be okay with a tie, or 4 on 4. I just think the skills competition is BS and should not be the factor when it comes to the standings and/or determining a playoff spot. Just my .02

So I'm in the minority for people that actually enjoy the shootout and never want to go back to ties? The only problem I have with the current system is the point distribution. Although if you made regulation wins 3 points, OT wins 2 and an OT loss 1, teams would drop out of the playoff chase much earlier and therefore incentive for those team's fans to keep paying attention dies down.

I'm with you on the shootout - I enjoy it and it provides excitement - it does get watered down when it happens all the time so maybe having less shootouts will make the ones that do take place more exciting for everyone

I'm kind of with you. I do not really like them but do prefer them to ties. I agree with you about the points.
