He doesn't even have to be good at defense. He just has to be better than Maatta & we're golden

Also want to add that we don't know for sure that Justin Schultz can't play defense. Hard for any young dman to showcase their defensive prowess playing for the Edmonton Oilers the past 9 years.

Since joining the Pens, he has 1 goal & 7 assists (8 points) in 18 games, and he's a +7.

With Schultz in for Maatta & Orpik being suspended for the next 3 games, we have become stronger offensively & they have become weaker defensively. I think we have a golden shot at defending home ice and returning to Washington DC with a 3-1 series lead

Shultz will at least give them extra speed if anything else over Maatta. As long as he is serviceable in his own end they are fine.
Also he can help on the pathetic PP so far, especially when Letang loses his cool and is out due to a penalty.

He could handle the puck which was something we were severely lacking from our dmen (with the exceptions of Tang & sometimes Daley). Also provides us with a very hard & accurate shot, which will help our 2nd unit power play. Pair him up with a defensive specialist (Lovejoy or Cole) and he will do fine. I've seen him play in Edmonton, he was their best rookie the lockout shortened season of 2013 (Nail Yakupov's rookie season). I think he will prove himself to be someone the Pens will want to keep for the long term.

Talent wise, Justin Schultz is our 2nd best dman next to Tang.

Good points. My only concern is that with his total lack of playoff experience and being paired with the likes of Lovejoy or Cole and then Lovejoy or Cole remember who they are and become Lovejoy or Cole. Man I hope that made sense I might need a few more of these well before game time tonight.

He's a restricted free agent after this season, so he'll be very motivated for a chance to earn big bucks playing for a competitive team after spending the past few years with the Oilers.

You think about it if all things go to plan next year you could be looking at a top 6 d-men of Letang, Shultz, Maatta, Dumoulin, Daley and Pouliot which has a lot of upside, speed and puck moving ability.

Wonder if MAF was playing if we would have seen more of Shultz and Pouliot, earlier in the playoffs?

Maatta's contract goes till 2022 tho, he's not going anywhere this year.

Oh I totally agree. The issue is the 4 million a year contract starting next year, unless he grows into some of that potential they are stuck with him until a Scuderi deal comes along.

I remember being mad about Tang's deal at first, but I'm happy we did it now. Hopefully, things turn out the same with Maatta's deal
