We keep hearing that a team should not draft for 'need' because it limits the overall outlook for the draft.

Yet when trying to teach a young person fiscal responsibility, we tell them, "Buy only what you need and stay away from buying what you want."

But what happens when what you want is what you need?

The Patriots' greatest "need" is a LT. Not just a LT, but a high quality LT who can keep all high speed, Edge players from getting to Drake Maye four or five times a week. With that known need, wouldn't it be in the best interest of the team to look at every freakin' LT available from every Div. 1 school and anaylze every aspect and measurement and then forget all of the outside BS and make sure that the best LT is on your board. Even if it's Mark Meup of Lafayette who's 6'5" 305 Was a three year starter. Gave up five sacks in 3 years and 12 QB pressures. May not have played against all of the big schools but played against at least half of them every year. The focus has become so narrow that we look at three guys and they all have faults. One has short arms. One has an attitude. One has never played LT. Everyone else is considered a leftover of the main course.

Sometimes, a leftover actually tastes better than it did that afternoon after a night in the refrigerator.

I think the issue is your needs change year to year. So always drafting for immediate need misses on the bigger picture. Getting a good LT now compared to a possible game changing Edge guy for example. Just because I know the Broncos roster best I keep thinking of 2021 NFL draft. Broncos biggest need was QB and that was the draft with Lawrence, Fields, Jones, and Lance. So of course most thought Broncos were going to go QB because it was easily the biggest need. They instead leaned into CB with Patrick Surtain when CB wasn't even a top-3 need on the team. They are reaping the benefits of that now having the DPOY on their roster while most of those QB's keep moving from roster to roster.

IMO, the final 53 will come out of this semi-final 63. Having a wicked time cutting the final 10.

I only did this because I was looking at the roster and began to nit-pick. Then I started thinking about 'who' fit 'where'. I know that there will be three QBs and one will be a non-roster #3 every week. I expect that by Week 8, Wooldridge will be #2. I should have included him in the first pass, but got so involved in having 7,8,9 IOL, IDL and secondary numbers, that I just never got back. It may be early, but from this draft, no one should be too confident.

Doing an exercise like this can open your eyes to where there will be real competition for a roster spot. AND how difficult it may be to make the decision of how many of certain numbers to keep.

I'mm willing to bet that at least three position will be filled because a player has Special Teams skills to go along with his position.

I wish I still lived in NH for the opening of training camp. I'd have a room at the cheesiest motel for at least the first week.

Possibly the reason Vrabel selected a LS in the draft? I wonder what the reason was for his departure? Thank you for your service and 10 years with the Pats Joe. Good luck to you.
Cardona was the last Patriots' Super Bowl player on this team. Vrabel has now cleared the Staff and team of all connections to Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. It may seem childish or cruel, but he had to make a clean break from the previous two staffs and team members. Everything and everyone other than Vrabel have never won a Patriots' ring. As Phil Perry said last night, "There are no past connections remaining. Everything has to move forward without reference to the past."

Doesn't mean he can't or won't be extended, Just means they are not committing to the 5th year option money.

That said, they'll probably go their separate ways.
Maybe. Who would fill in at LG? I cannot honestly say if he is good enough to resign or do we let him go? He was hurt last year, and there never was a legit LT beside him, then Andrews was constantly hurt. I just wonder how much of this affected his development. An O Line needs to grow togther, to meld, not sure he ever got that chance.

We'll see how it goes this year, I guess.
