Staff:
  • Not going to get optimistic about Coordinators because we've already beaten that dead horse enough. Tomlin sticking around so it doesn't matter who 'coordinates'. But I'll keep campaigning for them to fire Pat Meyer. Should have been fired last year. And now they have added a bunch of new pieces and still have the same results. Time to move on. I fear he may get the injury excuse this year. Losing Herbig, Fautanu, & Daniels for the majority of the season was rough. But seeing Jones go backward in development is very concerning.
  • Not sold on the likes of Sullivan (offensive assistant) & Eddie Faulkner (RB coach). New QB Coach Tom Arth makes Sullivan disposable. Being an offensive assistant on an offense that proved to be worse than a season prior puts you in the crosshairs. Rushing attack took a big step back this year. They had 2 stallions to work with and did next to nothing to utilize them correctly.
Draft: QB would be preferred, but this class just doesn't give anyone any confidence. So with that in mind:
  1. DL. You know I'm usually advocating for the trenches every year. DL surrendering as many yards rushing as they did down the stretch tells me they need to add a stud DL. Maybe 2. Heyward was all-pro, and Benton continues to develop. Larry O did little to impress. I think they need to add a Tuitt-like player to make this defensive front formidable once again. And a better anchor in the middle would be ideal.
  2. CB. Donte Jackson is a FA. Not sold on him long term if they bring him back. Sutton should be gone.
  3. WR. Could see this as high as Rd 1 if the right player is available. But I think they can find their guy in Rd 2 or 3. If they trade Pickens, then this needs to be one of their top 2 picks if they don't get aggressive in FA.
  4. QB. Quality is lacking, but a mid-Rd big-arm QB that is raw could be a good play.
  5. RB. This one will likely be higher on the list. But I'm not a fan of a 1st Rd pick. Give Warren the keys, and get him a bruising backup and they should be just fine.

Back to the updates. Honestly, I would love to see a revamped coaching staff from the coordinators down on all aspects except special teams.

As for the draft the early projections I hear are a DB from East Carolina named Shavon Revel but then I read the DT out of Michigan.
I would not be averse to either early pick.

As for RB I think it is time to move on from Harris, whatever they do please don't waste a 1st round on a RB but would be fine finding something elsewhere.

Broadly, dump contracts and malcontents and underachievers.

Make trades for future picks, put the rest into the lines.

Suck.

Hope Tomlin retires so someone else can come in and make use of the draft pick bounty.

I know they never would but trading Watt and Heyward and starting over with a proper rebuild would be great.

Giving them a chance to be on an organization that could win would be of proper respect to them.

Yeah, not the worst idea but as you said, would never would happen, the two fan favorites on the team getting traded would cause mass revolt and empty seats with the fanbase. I doubt there would be much uproar over trading Minkah or Pickens, even though the WR room in particular is pretty damn barren. I suppose that wouldn't matter much, without a decent QB on the roster to throw to them anyway. Insert sad face emoji here, since I don't feel like looking for it.

^ More QB's in the room and since it is just a futures contract probably will end up being their practice squad QB.

It's hilarious how upset people are about that signing... People are so angsty right now that they are looking WAY too far into a futures/reserves contract for a camp body.

Like chill, this isn't March. Everyone that will be a FA is still technically under contract.

If they were going to fire any coaches, you'd think they'd have done it by now.

Brace yourselves for the gang staying together for another historic run at not having a losing season.

Well Keith Butler didn't announce his "retirement" until January 22nd. Steelers like to finish their exit interviews first.

Also... Worth mentioning they are still under contract with Hard Knocks. Knowing the way the Steelers operate, they are likely being very delicate with the situation while the media is still within their doors filming everything.

Saleh would never come here. He's too good at what he does to sit back and watch Tomlin fingerblast his defensive gameplan every week.

I don't really know what to think here. What to root for. Tomlin isn't going anywhere so we're probably not winning any time soon. Hard to invest in a team you have no faith in. Need to get in ahead space like those mindless fans that just root no matter what.

Is there a chance that Fields can still be elite?

The eternal optimist in me was thinkin that if the Steelers showed interest in Saleh, that it would signal a change of guard. That Tomlin was finally willing to loosen his grip & let coordinators do their job.

But yea, same ol' song & dance. Austin & Meyer still employed. Maybe this week they finally show some balls.

I just don't think ANYBODY can be elite in this offense under the current staff. Even with a revamped OL, veteran QBs, good stable of RBs, and new assistant coaches they somehow looked worse than they did under Canada. Just another year that produced more questions than answers on offense. And Tomlin continues to be willfully dense about it.

FWIW, I like Fields and I think he is the best option for now. Even if the offensive gameplans are inept, he can create something out of nothing with his legs. I'm not ready to close the book on Fields as far as development. But I just don't see this staff ever capitalizing on his strengths.
