QB may be a need but Washington could pull off a massive trade haul for that pick

I am willing to bet no one here will say Sam is our guy . In fact the only one close to saying he is , is me and truthfully I think it’s 30 to 70 that he is . I wonder why he stopped running
One year ago following the Dallas game there was near unanimity for giving Howell a year to prove himself. In fact, Rivera himself backed that position by declaring Sam the starter for the 2023 season. Well, OK, let's give the kid that year and he's started all 17 games this year.

Early on the excitement following Sam's play saw another round of unanimity in favor of keeping the young man as the future centerpiece of this team's offensive rebuild. As his efforts faltered, that excitement was replaced by reality and people began to change their minds about him as the debate turned from certainty to uncertainty or discussions over which version was representative of him because this that, or a third wasn't ideal. (excuses) There are still posters who initially insisted upon giving the young man this year for evaluations and to prove himself, who are asking how on earth anyone can evaluate him presumably because we should forget about the "give him a year" bit and that the second-year man is basically a "rookie," crazy huh?

NO!! That would be no different than what they've consistently done in the past!

Not really because this is the deepest QB draft in years Williams, Maye, Daniels, Penix, McCarthy, Ewers, Nix, Ward
Having a deep class also means that there are gradients that separate them! Let's try to keep this pick and get a real talent for it!

I don't know how far back you're willing to go so I selected the last 20 years as a metric. Here's a list of Washington's first-round picks during that time frame and how they got them.

2023

  • Emmanuel Forbes | Pick 16
CB, Mississippi State (Kept their pick)

2022

  • Jahan Dotson | Pick 16
WR, Penn State (Traded down from pick 11)

2021

  • Jamin Davis | Pick 19
    LB, Kentucky (Kept their pick)

2020

  • Chase Young | Pick 2
DE, Ohio State (Kept their pick)

2019

  • Dwayne Haskins | Pick 15
QB, Ohio State (Kept their pick)
  • Montez Sweat | Pick 26
DE, Mississippi State (Traded up to get him)

2018

  • Daron Payne | Pick 13
DT, Alabama ( Kept their pick)

2017

  • Jonathan Allen | Pick 17
DE, Alabama ( Kept their pick)

2016

  • Josh Doctson | Pick 22
WR, TCU ( traded down from 21 to 22)

2015

  • Brandon Scherff | Pick 5
OT, Iowa ( Kept their pick)

2014

Washington traded the second pick to the St. Louis Rams. (Traded up)

2013

Washington traded the 22nd pick to the St. Louis Rams. (Traded up)

2012

  • Robert Griffin III | Pick 2
QB, Baylor (Traded up to get him)

2011

  • Ryan Kerrigan | Pick 16
DE, Purdue ( traded down from 11 to 16)

2010

  • Trent Williams | Pick 4
    OT, Oklahoma (Kept their pick)

2009

  • Brian Orakpo | Pick 13
    LB, Texas (Kept their pick)

2008

Washington traded the 21st pick to the Atlanta Falcons. (Traded down)

2007

  • LaRon Landry | Pick 6
DB, LSU ( Kept their pick)

2006

Washington traded the 22nd pick to the Denver Broncos. (traded down several times)

2005

  • Carlos Rogers | Pick 9
    DB, Auburn (Kept their pick)

So, trade away any chance at BPA in the entire draft to BPA among those available whenever you pick?

If I remember my draft history right the Redskins traded up to No 2 for an elite player who was a bust.

What should Washington have done this past year, draft another Dwayne Haskins? ... bust.

I seem to remember given the available choices and knowing the team was going to be in transition this year a number of us said well lets see what Howell can do?

After 24 years of bad football, bad coaching and most of all a bad owner I am going to give the Harris group a chance to build a competent FO, HC etc. and let those guys do what they think is best. If they hire the right people they will be smarter than any of us on this forum in regards to football knowledge.

I like Penix a lot. He really started to show last year and has been a stud this season. i know he has had some injuries but he looks good.

Will do! Good call on both of those guys. Did you see the Washington/ Texas game tonight? Once again, Penix is an assassin!

If Washington can land a LT in the 1st and Penix in the 2nd they won the draft

Until last night I had watched a few highlights of Penix. My concern with him was two ACL surgeries. I was quite impressed with his accuracy. He throws a very good long ball and he threw a few passes over the backers and before the DBs. Quick release.

Although he was very good, He was one pass away from being on the losing side. I thought Washington had the better defense but nether team played good defense.

Looking forward to seeing him play against Michigan.
