Your whole season depends on a guy who turns 39 in December and openely contemplated that the end of his career is not far away.

That's fan thinking, not organization thinking.

Why would they do that if all that it would have accomplished was "making them pay"? It would be a waste of time and could potentially cost them a shot at another FA that they wanted and could actually get.

I think that if the Lakers had been less adamant about matching any offer, then someone may very well have made one of the rumored big offers because there would have been a chance they could get him.

But the Lakers stating they were prepared to match any offer removed that incentive.
