Not gonna miss free. The last few years, he has been awful. Won't cry over Wilcox either. His poor tackling and coverage mistakes won't be missed. Changes to this secondary needed to be made. I think it was a year too late. In the long run, I believe we will have better players in the secondary then last year. It could not get much worse IMO. We just guaranteed five less drive killing penalties with free gone.

I think you are over stating his suckiness. Witten and Smith have the same tendencies. Last year was brutal on those offensive penalties all around.

Free was still stability. Not gonna be that easy to replace.

Million dollar question right there. I hope he is easy to replace but I am afraid it just won't be. Free was a great guy for the Cowboys.

I wish him luck in his next chapter.

Jeff Heath - DB - Cowboys
Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram considers Jeff Heath a leading candidate to start at strong safety in 2017.

The Cowboys' secondary will have a new look this year following the departures of Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox. While Heath is considered the favorite to succeed Church as the starting strong safety, he'll face competition from Kavon Frazier and potentially a rookie if the Cowboys address safety in the draft. Heath has spent the majority of his career as a special teamer, though he does have four career interceptions.

You may be right, but it just seemed that free's killed us the most over the years.

something should be said about serviceable and depth.
Free's exit can be overcome but by know means a given...just another hole to fill for a team with multiple holes.

we'll see soon enough

Oh I am right there with you but was pointing out that he was bad in that department but others were right on his heel. He actually wasn't as bad with penalties this passed year as he was with the missed/failed assignments.

Last year he had 8 penalties and 3 were presnap. Witten had 5 and 4 were presnap. The presnap ones are the ones you (well me anyways) get the most pissed about.

Funny thing about Witten is his false starts always seems to be at the worst times. Like red zone or late in game. But Could just be the ones you remember are the tough ones.

Yeah Free definitely hasn't been good lately. But I think things could be worse too. I think that Green may have beaten him out this upcoming year, like Parnell basically did. But, it would have been nice to know that the worst we could do was Free if Green was even worse. Fingers crossed we upgrade regardless of how we do it.

Speaking of false starts, didn't Green have as many in one game as Free had all season. I know they weren't called but they were there.

it's a tough game...professionals reside on both sides.
False starts can b a killer but when you know the other guy is much quicker, players tend to cheat to equal the advantage. Thankfully the human element still matters and there aren't any controllers or joysticks.

I'm wondering what's up with Mo and Carr. I've seen Mo linked to at least six teams. Shefter reported yesterday that he had signed with Seahawks, which I'm guessing is untrue. I just wonder if we are matching what others are offering or what. Carr - I haven't seen much interest yet

The funny thing about Green was it looked like he was moving early on every single snap in one of those games. I don't think too many were called, but he seemed to be anticipating and a half step too fast. I wouldn't be comfortable with handing him the job outright but he was way better in the real games when comparing to his preseason work. I'm sure we can find a FA T to compete.

I kept wondering how the refs weren't throwing flags. Of course I just sat back and enjoyed the win. Hopefully it was just him being nervous and had a case of the yips.

I'm feeling another signing/trade coming up soon. A lot of guys that can help us on the DL. I feel that is by far the biggest need, but don't want to force it in the first two rounds. I love what the team has been doing when going BPA and there are a lot of spots that we can upgrade - CB, S, DE, DT, WR, RT, etc...

I am there with you hoping for an upgrade. We have more holes then I thought would be open at this point, but excited about upgrading.

I'm really happy with the Cowboys approach the last several years, this offseason is no different. In the past, Jerry would have restructured deals on 30+ Vets, extending them into their mid to late 30's, just to go spend $100 million on guys that weren't wanted by their former team. Extending Star players in their 20's is never going to hurt you, and they aren't signing big dollar contracts with FA's, they are signing bargains like they have the past few years, and appear to be willing to continue to build through the draft and resign their own, in other words, the right way. Maybe it pays off this year, maybe it doesn't, but this is an approach that is going to keep Dallas young and competitive for years and years. Bravo

The Carroll signing keeps sounding better and better. Broaddus from Dallascowboys.com has a report coming out on him today. He went back and watched every play he played last year. He has been talking about how aggressive the guy is.
