Steelers passed on Jarvis Jones option.

I'm a little surprised. Seemed to me picking it up would be low risk. He obviously didn't deserve it but if he blows up this year this turns into a really bad move.

The option would cost the Steelers 8 million dollars.

You spend 3 years doing nothing, you shouldn't expect to get paid premium cash to do nothing for an extra year.

I guess it would be a testament that what they see from him day-in and day-out indicates the light isn't coming on.

They could still re-sign him if he improves.... But they won't be paying him 8 million per.

Well...considering he will most likely be in a platoon situation again...blowing up is probably 6 sacks.

Nah, they did the right thing on this one...I do expect him to get an mid range ($3 to $4 mil per) offer for 3 yrs...about his worth...aside from TN, I don't expect another team to swoop in and pay a ton more.

Well if he blows up and becomes the next Vonn Miller, then if the Steelers want to retain him by tagging him... Market value for that tag puts it just north of $15mil. Essentially that 5th year option would double. Its risky, but I think the Steelers have seen enough from him that made them pass on it. And @ATL96Steeler nailed it with his assessment. He'll be in a committee so the chances of him blowing up are pretty slim. He would have to go full-Lawrence-Taylor in order to push Butler away from the committee approach.

This move doesn't show much confidence in JJ and rightfully so. I'm sure this is Tomlin & Colbert's way of motivating him to prove himself by putting him into a contract year. And this puts the Steelers in a position of not having a whole lot of money invested in him & to not have to cut ties outright if he continues his average level of play. We know he hasn't produced enough to be worth $8mil, so IMO this was the right call.

It's put up or shut up time for JJ.

IMO JJ has been a decent player, so I'll give him a little more than nothing over his 3 yrs, but you don't give out $8 mil for decent.

I do think they will look at a 3 yr deal in the $9 to $12 mil range.

More than anything...the Steelers have put the ball in JJ's court. IMO if he has a season like LY...they will make a market rate offer...but I think he needs to be watching over his shoulder for Fenney and others...if the WAS kid bulks up about 20lbs and maintains his athleticism...he could be the guy.

Looking through the option guys...I have to pat myself on the back...the UGA LB I wanted in that draft was Ogletree...with a no go on Mingo and Jarvis Jones...he's the only LB taken in the 1st rd that got his option picked up.

Also looking at the pick 18 thru 32...it was a lean yr.

My point wasn't that he deserved it. My point was that they could lock him up to safeguard themselves in case he improved greatly. Giving him the option and then releasing him they aren't on the hook for that money. I'm not a JJ fan. Just surprised they didn't play it safe. I think it's telling what they think of him.

I am a JJ fan. I think he's a good football player, but thought it was a good move not to grant the option...I know guys can blossom late like a Worilds...and hopefully he does, but the sample size is large enough to project. He looks like a 5-6 sack guy top side.

The Rooney's are fair, and imo will make him a fair market offer if he plays as well as LY.

Freeney is too thin now, but he has the frame to add 20-25 lbs this season and reportedly has good pass rushing skills...maybe he's an option for ROLB in '17.
