Steelers passed on Jarvis Jones option.
I'm a little surprised. Seemed to me picking it up would be low risk. He obviously didn't deserve it but if he blows up this year this turns into a really bad move.
The option would cost the Steelers 8 million dollars.
You spend 3 years doing nothing, you shouldn't expect to get paid premium cash to do nothing for an extra year.
I guess it would be a testament that what they see from him day-in and day-out indicates the light isn't coming on.
Well if he blows up and becomes the next Vonn Miller, then if the Steelers want to retain him by tagging him... Market value for that tag puts it just north of $15mil. Essentially that 5th year option would double. Its risky, but I think the Steelers have seen enough from him that made them pass on it. And @ATL96Steeler nailed it with his assessment. He'll be in a committee so the chances of him blowing up are pretty slim. He would have to go full-Lawrence-Taylor in order to push Butler away from the committee approach.
This move doesn't show much confidence in JJ and rightfully so. I'm sure this is Tomlin & Colbert's way of motivating him to prove himself by putting him into a contract year. And this puts the Steelers in a position of not having a whole lot of money invested in him & to not have to cut ties outright if he continues his average level of play. We know he hasn't produced enough to be worth $8mil, so IMO this was the right call.
It's put up or shut up time for JJ.
My point wasn't that he deserved it. My point was that they could lock him up to safeguard themselves in case he improved greatly. Giving him the option and then releasing him they aren't on the hook for that money. I'm not a JJ fan. Just surprised they didn't play it safe. I think it's telling what they think of him.The option would cost the Steelers 8 million dollars.
