I wonder how much of that has to do with how Profar has played this season.

The FO has been really hard to peg as far as player valuations. For example, I always felt they overpaid for Harrison and underpaid Dutch, based on their respective recent performances at the time of the extensions. Then of course there is the Elvis contract.

Roogie extension talks break down. He turned down 6 years 35 million with 2 option years.
That would have been a good bargain for the Rangers if Odor continues to play as he has but I would expect him to improve over time making the deal look even better from the Rangers standpoint.

That's not a low ball offer at all. It's market value for him. The only reason they balked were the option years. Compare it to the Kolton Wong and Gregor Polanco deals and it's fair.

Yeah but Roogie is awesome and those guys aren't. You're forgetting that.

Roogie has serious discipline issues and is league average offensively because of it. If he could become a more patient hitter he would get a better deal. He only needs to walk about 5-8% of the time and he would be fine.

Four Texas Rangers prospects in Keith Law top 50 list

Keith Law's midseason top 50 prospect list is out, and the Texas Rangers have four prospects who crack the list.

Joey Gallo is, as you would expect, the top ranked Ranger at #18, but Lewis Brinson is close behind him at #21...Law doesn't appear too bothered by Brinson's slow start to the season at AA Frisco, and calls Brinson's defense in center field "elite."

A couple of Frisco pitchers then sneak in at the back part of the list...Luis Ortiz is at #46, while Yohander Mendez at #49. Ortiz is around where you'd expect, though Mendez is a bit of a surprise...Law praises his three pitch mix, and calls Mendez a potential MORP if he can handle a starter's workload.

You are right about his plate discipline and he is still has some work to do defensively. Do see a consistent 270-275 hitter with 20-25 HRs a year. Would probably be higher with better discipline because pitchers would know they have to get the ball over the plate against him.

The White Sox are said to be interested in a CF. I wonder if we could interest them in DeShields.

Probably wouldn't get that much in return. Maybe as part of a bigger deal. Maybe for a reliever.

Well, we can cross Drew Pomeranz off our potential trade candidate list. He's headed to Boston:
Red Sox To Acquire Drew Pomeranz

They gave up their top pitching prospect (#14 overall according to Keith Law) to get him. So we can thank Boston for setting the bar high on what we'll have to give up for someone good.

:gaah:

From Scott Lucas:

Baseball America released its updated top-ten prospects for Texas today. It's paywalled, so I can't just give you free ice cream, but I will say there's no major surprises with the possible exception of young OF Leody Taveras at #5. 3B Joey Gallo is still first, and 1B Ronald Guzman and LHP Yohander Mendez have taken the biggest positive steps.

Whoever the Rangers go for as a SP add they need to get going soon. We start the second half of the season tomorrow afternoon and we still have a huge gaping hole in the 5th slot of our rotation.

ESPN ranks Beltre, all time at 3rd:

8. Adrian Beltre

Honors
NL Silver Slugger ('04), three AL Silver Sluggers ('10-11, '14), four AL Gold Gloves ('07-08, '11-12), four-time AL All-Star (2010-12, '14)

Championships
None

Career stats*
285/.337/.476, OPS -- .813, Hits -- 2,856, HRs -- 425, RBIs -- 1,522

*Stats through July 10, 2016

The player

Beltre has always received recognition for his glove, but I don't know that people realize how good a hitter he is. He has 11 seasons of at least 250 total bases, tied with Mike Schmidt and Eddie Mathews for the lead at the position, eight seasons of at least 25 home runs, and his 404 career homers hit while playing third base trail only Schmidt (509) and Mathews (461). -- Cockcroft

Late in his career, everyone has come around to appreciate his greatness, and he's now widely considered a future Hall of Famer. He's going to reach 3,000 hits -- he's already over 2,800 -- and will come close to 500 home runs, a credit to his durability and aging well as he enters his late 30s. In his prime, he was a gifted third baseman, one of the best ever at charging bunts. -- Schoenfield

If he's elected to the Hall of Fame -- and his candidacy grows exponentially with each passing year -- maybe he finally will allow someone to pat him on the head. Have you ever seen a player look more impressive making flat-footed, sometimes-sidearm throws from third base? -- Scott Lauber, ESPN.com Red Sox reporter
