Congrats on the bowl guys!!!
The Liberty Bowl wants Tennessee to return to Memphis.
As one of the games that make up the Pool of Six along with the Outback, TaxSlayer, Music City Belk and Texas bowls, the Liberty Bowl does not have final say over its SEC representative. The conference makes that decision. However, Liberty Bowl officials have made their preference known to the league office.
"We've made it very clear that Tennessee is the team we want," Harold Graeter, the Liberty Bowl's associate executive director, said Thursday. "We've been following Tennessee since Signing Day. ... We visited with (Tennessee coach Butch Jones) and (athletic director) Dave Hart throughout the spring, summer and fall. We went to five UT games. We've been very visible and very out front about the team we'd like to have. There's no secret about the team that we want."
The Vols (6-6, 3-5 SEC) haven't played in the Liberty Bowl since 1986. Bowl officials want them back because they believe it would be good for the game and for UT.
"It's the flagship university of the state, and they haven't played in our game in 28 years," Graeter said. "... . There's a huge base of alums in this part of the state. There are 9,000 UT Knoxville alums within 25 miles, so that's a substantial number of alumni here. Coming here would certainly dovetail what Butch is trying to do from a recruiting standpoint and it dovetails with the university trying to attract students from Memphis."
The Liberty Bowl's other tie-in is much more cut and dry as the league gets the fifth selection from the Big 12. Graeter said that they are looking at West Virginia and Texas, and with the Texas Bowl having the fourth selection, it seems likely that the Longhorns will be on the board.
If the Liberty Bowl is denied the Vols, Graeter said, Arkansas would be its second choice, but officials will keep pushing for the Vols until the SEC makes its decision.
"Right now our focus is mainly on University of Tennessee," Graeter said. "They know that. We say everything with the caveat being that the final decision rests with the league office, so we eagerly await."
