First practice is Friday at 3pm CT.

Also:

Tennessee will open spring practice without one of its biggest playmakers in Alton ‘Pig’ Howard.

Butch Jones told TimesNews via text message that Howard is “dealing with some personal circumstances.” Jones confirmed that Howard is still enrolled in school.

Howard is a big piece to the Vols’ puzzle of getting things turned around. He caught 44 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns in 2013, which led the Vols in catches and touchdowns.

Tennessee opens spring practice Friday afternoon.

Neiko Creamer - Yahoo! Sports

Tennessee will have some new faces at new positions when the Vols take the field on Friday for the first practice of the spring session. Freshman athlete Nieko Creamer, one of 14 early enrollees who will practice this spring, will start his career at linebacker, Vols coach Butch Jones told the News Sentinel.

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee fifth-year senior defensive tackle Gregory Clark is moving on with his post-college career and won’t be on the Vols’ roster in 2014.

Coach Butch Jones confirmed that Clark was moving on.

A native of Warner Robins, Ga., Clark emerged as a valuable backup on a depleted defensive line in 2013. Pressed into action after Mo Couch was declared ineligible, Clark teamed with Danny O’Brien in the second-team tackle unit.

The 2013 season was the highlight of what had previously been an undistinguished career. Clark redshirted in 2010 and was a little-used reserve in 2011 and 2012.

The Vols could be thin again at defensive tackle, particularly in the spring before reinforcements arrive this summer. Danny O’Brien, Jason Carr and newcomers Owen Williams and Dimarya Mixon are likely to make up the two-deep rotation.

Starting tight end Brendan Downs and reserve wide receiver Drae Bowles will miss spring ball due to injury, coach Butch Jones said Thursday during a pre-spring press conference at Neyland Stadium.

The Vols open the second spring of Jones' tenure on Friday at Haslam Field.

In addition to Downs and Bowles, Jones had previously confirmed injuries to receiver Ryan Jenkins, defensive tackle Trevarris Saulsberry, tight end A.J. Branisel and safety Brian Randolph.

All 14 of the Vols' early enrollees should be ready to go, however, and Jones said the newcomers will elevate the level of competition.

"They're eager. They're willing. They have no bad habits right now. They hang on everything you say," Jones said.

Jones said there is no timetable for settling the team's four-man quarterback battle.

"That person will emerge," Jones said. "That will take care of itself."

He said sophomore Joshua Dobbs was now up to 210 pounds and looked "vividly different" than the skinny freshman that arrived a year ago.

Jones said Dobbs, redshirt freshman Riley Ferguson, senior Justin Worley and sophomore Nathan Peterman will be evaluatd in everything they do.

"Every rep is a valuable rep," Jones said. "You better make sure you make the most of every single rep. Every single rep is to be the starting quarterback."

Some notes:

Injury update:
• Out: WR Ryan Jenkins, DT Trevarris Saulsberry, TE Brendan Downs, TE A.J. Branisel, S Brian Randolph, WR Drae Bowles
Other notes/observations:

Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd. (Photo: Daniel Lewis)
• The Vols were in pads for the first time on Tuesday afternoon. They began practice with their ‘circle of life’ drill where two players go one-on-one and try to knock the other one out of the circle, which is comprised of all the other players watching. Receiver Von Pearson appeared to get the best of veteran cornerback Justin Coleman during one round. Jones sent many of the newcomers in to test them immediately.
• In what will likely be a reoccurring theme throughout the spring and fall, coaches are already trying to get running back Jalen Hurd to play lower. That’ll be one of the biggest challenges for the 6-foot-3 freshman, who is a couple inches taller than an average SEC running back. He clearly has the frame and the athleticism to play, but will need to play low to avoid taking too many big hits.
• Newcomers OL Dontavius Blair, CB Emmanuel Moseley, OL Coleman Thomas, TE Ethan Wolf, DL Owen Williams and WR Von Pearson are all consistently getting reps with the first team. Several others such as Hurd, WR Josh Malone, TE Daniel Helm, CB D’Andre Payne and LB Jakob Johnson are getting a lot of work with the second team. Some of those spots will have added depth when players get back from injuries and new arrivals come over the summer, but, for now, a lot of inexperienced players are getting plenty of reps.
• The size upgrade at several spots is very noticeable. The Vols will be smaller in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but the quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, tight ends and linebackers all look much more SEC-ready than last year. Some of that is thanks to the improvement in strength from returning players and some is attributed to the size of the newcomers.

More notes:

• Speaking of the circle drill, freshman linebacker Jakob Johnson, whom Jones called "Germany," (he's originally from Stuttgart), held his own against All-SEC 'backer A.J. Johnson. Freshman offensive tackle Coleman Thomas won his matchup with defensive end Dimarya Mixon, another newcomer. Jones called out a few of Tennessee's 14 January enrollees to take a turn.

• In the one-on-one in the end zone following Pearson's highlight-reel catch, Jason Croom drew a pass interference penalty on a slant pattern against Sutton. The Vols then went into some offensive tackle-defensive end one-on-ones, with Corey Vereen besting Dontavius Blair, the junior college transfer, and Thomas holding his own with Maggitt.

• Running backs coach Robert Gillespie continued to work five-star freshman Jalen Hurd. During a drill where the backs worked on staying low and balanced as they bounced off a blocking pad held by a manager, Gillespie stopped Hurd and made him start the drill over. Then the former Florida tailback got hands-on with Hurd, physically lifting his left leg to show the proper technique.

Hurd looking good:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In his first performance in Neyland Stadium wearing Orange & White, freshman running back Jalen Hurd sure made an impression on his coach and his teammates. The early enrollee, who graduated Beech High School in December, made the most of his debut.

"I felt like he did really well," said redshirt freshman quarterback Riley Ferguson. "(He was) getting out in the open and making people miss. That is what he does, he is a big body and he can run fast and that is what we need."

For Hurd seeing full-fledged action in pads shows his significant progress after missing virtually all of his senior year of highs school after suffering a broken collar bone on his first game of 2013.

"He hasn't played football in a year with recovering from the surgery so each day of practice I see him getting better and better," said head coach Butch Jones. "I see the improvement coming but I also see the confidence getting in him as well."

The Vols used four quarterbacks during Friday's scrimmage as they all had a chance to work with Hurd. They raved about his skill set and technique.
