He was a nice pick, but we're drafting on peak years. There are a few seasons still out there that were better than any of his...

(for future drafts, I would much rather use career numbers - which would make Kirby much more valuable)...

He lead the league in hits 4 times, won a batting title, two Championships, multiple Gold Glove winner and as good a leader as i've ever seen. I'll take that over Canseco hitting 40 home runs a few times, being a clubhouse cancer and terrible in the field anyday.

I had Kirby as the #5 OF behind Bonds, Jr, Gwynn and Henderson. I figured he would go late 1st, early 2nd

As would anyone in real life...

But this is a mock draft and when we (or whoever judges our teams) evaluates players, they have to look at pure stats...

It sounds like we are changing the rules here (which is fine by me). Should we go beyond stats and beyond peak years? I actually find it much easier to use career numbers and character when evaluating players....

Rules are the rules. Prime years. I think if we ever do an all time draft again, longevity should definitely supersede one or two great years

I apologize I don't think we explained the rules to you.

We do not allow outside voting anymore, the winner will be decided by those in the draft. When we post our final team on the team page we are allowed to post three stats or accomlishments about each player, whatever you want but ONLY THREE. So you can write 5 time All Star, 7 Gold Gloves and 50 HR's in 1990, or career .320 hitter, 440 career home runs and Hall of Famer, whatever you want.

I think an interesting argument will come when comparing say Puckett vs Canseco's peak year. Canseco was 40-40, bash brothers and all that. Gonna have great stats. But even at his peak, I never felt like he was the best player on his own team or the main reason they won a title. That said, his peak year numbers will be insane. Sad that when I think of Jose, I think of balls bouncing off his head for homers. I remember McGuire saying as good as Canseco was, he was the biggest waste of talent ever. Didn't work a lot on his game, just a freak talent

Well, the most imporatant rule is to have fun and possibly learn something.... This three 'stat' rule is quite interesting.... I'll look at players differently with this mindset...

I was thinking of his 40-40 MVP year when I picked him.

And, I enjoy these little comparisons and discussions during the drafts... Makes picking more fun...
