Only there is little really that fair in an auto bid and it's hardly black and white.
The NFL has 32 teams controlled by one central governing body. They have parity in schedules, parity in player acquisition with a hard salary cap, and the disparity in talent between the top team and the median is relatively low.
FBS has 10 entirely different conferences that all choose their own rules and criteria for just about everything. They each have different schedules and don't all play the same number of games. There is no parity of any kind in player acquisition. The difference between the top team in FBS and the median is greater than any other sport of any kind by miles.
The crowned winner of Conference USA is not on par with the crowned winner of the SEC. They are not in the same league. And yet you and your ilk want to lump them together and throw out every other very good team in the country that just happened to have a slightly better one in the same conference in lieu teams that played nothing but crap sandwiches all year.
It isn't anything that approaches fair or balanced. Sure, it's easier for casual fans to understand maybe, but that doesn't make it better or fair.
Well, at least I understand where you are coming from.
You worry about who the real #2 is. I don't.
We can argue about who is #2 during the off season.
You are 100% correct on how the NFL is different from CFB.
BUT...the NFL does manage to stay away from "another man's opinion and their fans are fine with that.
If you are an 8-8 Divison Champ and you face an 11-5 at-large team
in the first round of the playoffs...the Div Champ is the host team
not the 11-5 wildcard team. Their system is very straight forward
and upfront and all can understand it.
But the NFL doesn't play games against the CFL. There isn't some
team from Europe or Japan that plays an exhibition game against
the NFL.
I'm just saying that if Group of 5 teams can be scheduled by P5
teams then a Group of 5 team should get a spot in a playoff.
And the best way to do that is to take Conf Champs.
I don't believe that teams/players should automatically be eliminated by another man's opinion. If my team wins the
SEC they play in the playoffs. If they don't...they don't.
If we don't want to do that...then let the Go5 split off and have
their own playoff system...and only play against other Go5 teams.
The P5's play against each other and nobody else. The only added
expense will be at Kansas, Illinois and Oregon State. They'll have
to modernize their phone systems to handle all the incoming calls.
