The whole "biased refs" thing has always struck me as incredibly ridiculous......do people really think refs want one team or the other to win?

As someone who has done a lot of reffing and umping over the years, I'll tell you its basically impossible to consciously call for one team over the other, because that forces you to pause and think after every call rather than just react.....it would be very obvious.

And that's beyond the general ridiculousness of the notion that there is some bias going on.

I agree for the most part, except for that study that was done that refs have a tendency to make calls that favor the home team because they elicit a loud cheer.

That kind of positive reinforcement can cause bias

So let me get this straight, he is saying if a defender hits a guy and stops him the play is dead? Because I see r s get pushed from behind after contact all the time which gives them more yards

Home field advantage is totally different, yeah refs have a slight preference toward home teams in every sport, there's an intimidation factor involved. This is why the NBA has the most dominant home-court advantages - because the fans are right on top of them and can be quite "persuasive"
