From The Mag: The story of Kobe Bryant's greatest game

Arash with a great oral history of the game. I love this part about the 62 point game against Dallas:

Brian Shaw: After the third quarter, the players were on the bench and the coaches went out and huddled on the court. Phil asked me to go ask Kobe if he wanted to stay in the game and try to get 70 and then come out. So I went up to Kobe and said, "Hey, Coach wants to know if you want to stay in for the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, get 70 and then come out." He looked up at the scoreboard, and he said, "Nah, I'll get it another time." I looked at him and I kind of got mad. I said: "What?! You have a chance to get 70 points. How many people can say they scored 70 points? Just stay in the first few minutes and get another eight points, get 70 and then come out of the game." He said: "I'll do it when we really need it. I'll get it when it really matters."

On that video, I was watching the deficit disappear and turn into a lead.

I hated Kobe in his prime. As a Portland fan, he just destroyed us when it mattered.

But one thing about Kobe is, I respected him. Because he was just damn good. I didn't like his cocky attitude, but I respected him. Maybe it was because I failed to recognize and enjoy Jordans greatness when he was in his prime (Because I was a Magic fan and liked Penny Haradaway, I despised the Bulls).

But Kobe, yeah he was good.

Yep. It doesn't seem like he's been wearing #24 that long.

I remember turning on sportscenter that night right as they were going to commercial break. I heard the anchor say something about "Kobe" and "81 points". I was 100% positive that I heard wrong or they said it wrong.

I'm a long time Kobe hater but can't deny his elite scoring ability. One of a kind.

Doubt anyone will ever even hit 70 let alone 81 points in one game. Maybe if Steph gets insanely hot he can come close to 70 but he's probably the only active player with that potential. Maybe KD.

I'll never forget where I was for that game; standing half drunk at a Taco Bell and looking at the TV when I heard them mention Kobe had 60 pts with a like a quarter to go. I raced back to my apartment to finish watching the game even though I could have just sat down in the Taco Bell, ate my food and watched the game.

It's hard to do anyway let alone do it in a game where it isn't wiser to just rest the player. I mean, I can see Steph getting to 55 in the second or mid-third, but they'd be up 25 points. They are one ACL tear away from a tough season, rest him if you can. Records are meant to be... nah, rest up.

Yeah, part of the reason that Kobe was able to get that many points was because that Lakers team needed pretty much every single one of those points to win the game. It's unlikely that Curry and GSW will be in that position any time soon.

Very good point, it's something that Curry would probably be more likely to do in an early game in the season since rest is going to become more and more of a factor as we get closer to April/March.
