Panaccio: Flyers Could Re-sign Carter and Leino

There’s been some angst among fans in Flyerdom about how the Flyers are going to re-sign Jeff Carter and still have salary cap dollars remaining for Ville Leino.

It can be done. And it likely will get done, based on conversations with all parties.

Sometime before the month is over, Carter should have a 10-year deal worth between $60 million and $63 million.

Re-signing the team's leading scorer for this year, last year, and the year before to a contract that isn't even top 2 most expensive on the team?

Make it happen.

10 years? 10 years?!?!

If I was a GM of ANY pro sports team......I wouldn't lock up anybody for 10 fucking years.

The price hurts the most IMO, and that price blended with that length...

Six million would be fantastic. It was obvious, especially in this market, that Carter was going to get a raise. If that raise is only 1 million, the Flyers will be in okay shape - and when I say okay, I mean not completely dire. But hey, to be an elite team in this league costs money.

Make it happen.

For someone with his talent 10/63 is a good deal. I just hope he doesn't get lazy once he signs on the dotted line. He would have even more trade vlue with a reasonable long term deal so i think it is win/win.

A few guys in approximately the same pay range/contract duration:

Nicklas Backstrom: $67 million/10 years
Mike Richards: $69 million/12 years
Duncan Keith: $72 million/13 years
Henrik Zetterberg: $73 million/12 years

You mean to tell me that we can't find a better way to commit $60 million over 10 years than Jeff Carter?

I was just looking at the same thing. in the long run these long term contracts are nothing more than cap circumventions. The clauses that are written into theses contracts are what make them doable.. This is in my opinion a very good deal because Ville comes in for pretty cheap..:D

when i first read 10 years i got a little sick to my stomach.
it would make him harder to move or diminish what we could get for him should we ever want to trade him.
i mean 6 mil is probably what hes going to get cause he's due for a raise. if he were to hit the open market he'd get around 6.3-7 i would say so i guess that 6 mil is a fair price for a player of his caliber, but its the 10 years that really bothers me. as many regular season goals as he's gotten, hes never once shown us a reason to lock him up for a decade and for practically the rest of his career. failure to show up in big games, streaky, periods of laziness and disinterest. if i were the flyers, i would sign him for another 3-5 year type deal. don't commit your franchise to him..

If this 6 mil a year is correct. I have no problem with it. My main problem with Carter is that I figured he would demand Kovy type money up in the 8-9 million range. Lets see some more consistency from him and we have a steal

Co-signed -- seconded -- ditto

Like I said...in my opinion...10 years is too long to commit to anyone in any sport.
