Love that you believe they would fire him so quickly in-season when they extended his contract after last season's disaster.

I don't think it will make much difference if things clearly aren't working. You'll recall that Wilson was extended shortly before they canned him and brought in Randy. And they only extended Randy for one extra year, it's not like they made a big expensive long term commitment.

What's more bold, the Red Wings missing the playoffs or the Red Wings surpassing 100 points?

Brian Burke got drunk on Christmas Eve and wrote a contract on a whiskey-stained cocktail napkin for Wilson, and that still might've been a more logical move than extending Randy. I have no idea why Randy's still there and I don't have any faith that anything would change with a poor start, not that I'm expecting a poor start. These are the Leafs - they'll hang around a playoff position until mid-March and then plunge.

I think they extended Randy a year because they didn't feel ready to fire him outright but thought it sent a bad message to have a coach in the last year of his contract. Still a stupid move, but not one that's got any permanency to it. Like I said, if things go bad at some point this year I don't think Randy will last, I don't think the new contract bought him any more leash.

"But if they were going to fire him at the first sign of trouble this year, why wouldn't they have just fired him in the offseason?"

Ask yourself this... would that be anywhere close to the stupidest/craziest mistake you've seen this team make?

No, that's why I was only slightly amused rather than totally fucking shocked that they kept dipshit on board to begin with.

Here's the other thing about the extension: they don't have to pay him if he lands somewhere else after getting fired, and we've heard and read various places from various people that if Randy's fired he'll have no trouble at all finding another job. And while that seems idiotic to me (and probably to you as well), I suspect that it's accurate.
