This is just another quick little something I was thinking about following the Kings' stunning Game 3 win last night (quick, raise your hand if you thought the Kings would be up 3-0? okay, now put your hand down you liar).

I think the fact that the Penguins & Red Wings went to back-to-back Cup finals in 2008 & 2009 tricked people into forgetting what typically happens to Stanley Cup finalists the following season. Let's go back to the lockout:

2006- Carolina Hurricanes vs. Edmonton Oilers- both teams miss playoffs in 2007
2007- Ottawa Senators vs. Anaheim Ducks- both teams eliminated in 1st round in 2008
2008- Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings- the exception that proves the rule
2009- Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings- both teams eliminated in 2nd round in 2010
2010- Philadelphia Flyers vs. Chicago Blackhawks- Flyers eliminated in 2nd round, Hawks eliminated in 1st round in 2011

(In case you're really bad at math- only 5 of 10, exactly half, of the finalists make it out of the 1st round the following season. Of those 5, only 2 make it out of the 2nd round.)

Of course nothing is over yet and all that, but it sure looks like the Canucks are continuing that trend. Simply put, it's almost impossible to make a deep run in back-to-back seasons in the modern NHL.

pretty obvious playoffs and regular season are a different animal ... you can coast during a regular season ... you can show up 75% of the time in the regular season (as Ray Ferraro always says is the norm) ... you cant pull that shit in the playoffs ... you get exposed in best of 7 game series ... especially when the opposition is bigger and plays a structured game where eveyone is all in

I dont think canuck players are all in ... Kesler thinks he's a one man act ... complete with diving ... they used to call the second line the helicopter line here (ie he wasnt playing with good wingers ... NO WINGS) ... im starting to think he's the problem ... he doesnt distribute ... he doesnt set things up ... all he tries to do is make solo plays and let go of the wrist shot ... fuckin predictable ... and now Booth is on his wing and he's the same player :L PLUS Kesler is a big body and the only time he uses it is when hes doing a 3/4 twisting half pike sommersault ... he doesnt answer the bell when his teammates are taking it ... Trevor Linden used to get crucified for this by Canucks fans but Kesler for some reason gets a pass :noidea:

it didnt help the canucks when management decided to shift philosophy at the trade deadline and came to realize the refs werent going to call anything and the way their team was structured wouldnt bring success ... as if the boston series didnt convince them ????

in this series
the canucks didnt show up for game 1
they showed up for game 2 but made a couple of critical mistakes
they showed up for game 3 but made 1 critical mistake
progression????

I swear to god, puck and matt were saying this throughout the end of the season, maybe I read wrong

yup. last season they were a dominant team most games.
this year I can't remember it. maybe the memory is foggy due to them coasting for the last couple of months... maybe it's because they were 'less good' at home, and those stand out more, maybe because they literally backed into the Pres trophy (NYR and STL both had it in their grasp)... this team has just not looked elite this year.

I love hearing that Kesler commercial on Team 1040 radio:

"Whenever the puck is on my stick, I have options" - How about passing the puck, Ryan?

Kesler now 15 games w/out a goal. 10 goals in 51 career playoff games

5 of those were against Nashville last year.

I dont know about this ... doctors better be ok with it

@VanCanucks: Daniel Sedin will join #Canucks for full team practice in LA on Tuesday. Coach Vigneault to comment shortly.

/my first thought is the canucks are doing it for some futile emotional lift ... cant see him practicing once and BANG in the lineup
