I will say this though, Beckett hurled some absolute gems that year. Held the Rays to just one hit twice, held the Yanks to 2 hits in 8 IP in April, and an 11 K game against the Astros.

When Beckett was at his best, his performance were a thing of beauty.

looking back at Beckett's Red Sox career reminded me that the 2006 rotation consisted of Jason Johnson, Kyle Snyder and Lenny DiNardo. Jesus.

You forgot the immortal Kason Gabbard.

Some of the prospects never panned out...and they traded away Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena.

But lester and Wake still made a bunch of starts with Schilling and Beckett.

Lester/Beckett/Wake were more or less league average. Schilling had a very good year, but Clement was pretty much done after the line drive injury. As frustrating as the bullpen has been this year, I'd still take it over that mess in 2006 (and that's with Papelbon's amazing year).

league average is far better than the trainwrecks you were mentioning before.

We're watching the best crop of young shortstops in MLB history

Lindor's awesome, but I'd give Seager the edge because of the bat. This is a guy whose numbers compare favorably to the best hitting 1B right now. Seager has a 147 wRC+, which is tied with Miggy. The only 1B ahead of him are Freeman (148), Rizzo and Votto (both 149). Seager's having a season on par with the likes of Nomar/A-Rod offensively.

Regardless, it's a pretty amazing group of shortstops right now. Russell's shown a lot of improvement at the plate and I expect him to break out next year. I think you'll also see more power from Bogaerts next year as well.

Keep in mind that list doesn't include the likes of J.P. Crawford, Orlando Arcia (whom I keep mixing up with Oswaldo Arcia), Dansby Swanson, Ozzie Albies or Brendan Rodgers.
