Even worse...though they are not famous another teenager and her father were on the flight and lost their lives.

so sad.

Have an acquaintance whose daughter played with Gigi. They were literally at the practice Kobe was en route to when the news broke.

I am sad because Kobe was a living legend. And the thing about celebrity deaths is that they are felt across the globe. Because every basketball fan connected with Kobe on some level.

But this is just absolutely devastating to those knew him personally. From what I have heard, seems like he was a really good dude.

Kobe was a great player.

But LeBron was the ONLY player from the modern era to enter the NBA straight out of high school and be ready to be a star.

Not a knock on Kobe to say he wasn’t on LeBron’s level. But it really isn’t conjecture. If Kobe was was as good as LeBron as a rookie, he would have had a much greater role with or without Eddie Jones on the roster.

It took Kobe, KG, TMac, Dwight, Jermaine O’Neal, etc. a few years to get up to speed. LeBron hit the ground running like no other and he has kept it going.

Which is why I believe only a semi early retirement or serious injury will keep LBJ from eventually passing Kareem.

I never said Kobe would have been as good as Lebron. In fact, I specifically said that Kobe would not have put up the numbers that Lebron did.

What I did say was that I think he could have been fine if he had to start right away. Which I believe he would have.

The Lakers had an all star shooting guard which allowed the Lakers the luxury of not having him start right away.

Really not sure what folks aren't grasping.

Thought it was a class move by both the Raptors and Spurs in their game to let the 24 second shot clock run out to start the game as a way to honor Kobe.

Such a tragedy, may he, his daughter and all the others who were on that helicopter RIP.

Kobe's greatness and what he achieved as a player coming out of HS paved the way for Lebron to become a superstar at that young of an age. Kobe also wasn't given the opportunity to play right away as Lebron was. That Lakers team he was drafted to was trying to compete for a championship, whereas Lebron was able to learn on the fly. Kobe was also blocked at the time by Eddie Jones who became an allstar that year.

Now not saying Kobe was necessarily NBA ready like Lebron was, but if you gave Kobe 30 minutes a night and a prime role, I think his "production" in his rookie year is much higher.

It just seems a little to unreal for me today.

Other than the amazing respect and support the teams playing yesterday gave Kobe, I had absolutely ZERO interest in basketball. I don't think I care for much today, nor the Lakers v Clippers game I was kinda looking forward to tomorrow.

I couldn't believe how hard this hit Jerry West personally...

Ugh. A home game between two LA teams as their first game after this. Going to be a weep fest...

I always did wonder how Kobe would have done on the Cavs the first time before the big 3. He was a smarter player earlier in his career. Not as NBA ready as Lebron, but Lebron made a lot of dumb basketball decisions, was scared to close out games, a lot of turnovers, no killer instinct. He never really learned how to win until he learned from Wade. Kobe didn't need to learn how to win. I think the cavs may have been more successful in their first stint with kobe than lebron.

What's weirder?

I really hope the Lakers win.

Last time that happened was Kobe's final game against Utah.

That game is even more magical today.
