So here's my conundrum, I want a better ball to play with but I don't want to spend $60/dozen on Pro V1s because I lose probably 6 balls playing 18 holes and would bankrupt myself. What's a decent ball in the like $20-$30/dozen range that I won't feel as bad losing but get the benefits of a better ball? There's a ton of rankings online and outside of the top few golf balls, all about the same price ($60/dozen) they aren't very conclusive. Anyone have experience with better balls?

I do know I tend to like a softer ball off the tee, I seem to drive better and with more control.

:L

Go on E-bay and buy some refurbished balls or something. If you're losing 6 balls per 18 holes you could hit rock hard Top-flites and it won't make a difference.

BTW, I bought 3 dozen brand new Callaway Warbird 2.0 balls for just under a $1 a ball, free shipping. They were manufacturer logo overrun and I will eliminate the tiny "Trinity Health of New England" logo with my own personal marking :thumb:

Better yet, find the guy that lives near the golf course that scavenges balls on or near his property and buy the used ones he is selling.

Brah, if you lose 6 balls a round, it doesn't matter which kind :D
Maybe I’ll only lose 4 with a better ball?

What can I say, I like playing in the woods.

For the record I usually play with the cheap top flight or Wilson balls that you can get like 2 dozen for $20. Just having experienced other balls, usually by finding them on the course, I think I might be doing a disservice to myself by using the cheap ones.

You can pick ProV1s up online for < $30 a dozen. I've had good luck with lostgolfballs.com. But at the risk of piling on, if you lose 6 per round the ball probably isn't the problem.

I agree that losing a half dz balls per 18 is not conducive to playing PV1s. I think the higher spinning balls are harder to control if you're putting a lot of sidespin on the ball off the tee, but I think most players would benefit around the greens with a ball that will bite and check up with reasonably clean clubface to ball contact.

In your shoes I would be looking for these.

This is basically a knock off Titleist PV1...Acushnet sued Costco over copyright infringement and apparently they lost because Costco is producing these balls again.

I've played these on and off for a couple of yrs now. It's not as good as a PV1, but it's so close that for the money/performance they are a steal....$25 for 2 dz 3 pc balls with a urethane cover is a VERY good price.

2nd Choice

Vice Pro

I haven't played these aside from playing previously lost balls...one of the guys in my group buys and plays them...the pro is $25 per dz, performance is similar to a PV1.

Play with the refurbs. You can get a dozen Pro V1s or Pro V1Xs for 20 bucks. But as far as cheap balls are concerned, Top Flight and Wilson’s feel like hitting rocks to me.

I’ve always liked Maxfli and Pinnacle. I play with Calloway balls but if I’m teeing off close to the woods or a water hazard, I’ll pull a cheap one out of the bag. They play pretty well but if I hook it onto the trees or get it wet, who cares.

When I find good prices (under $35 for PV1, or under $30 for Callaway Chrome Soft I go for it and normally buy 3 or 4 dz for the season....this yr I found the Chrome Soft + for $26 per dz on close out in yellow.

I’ve never bought any refurb balls before but have played plenty of found balls...repurposed for me...lol

I go ball hawking when I’m behind a large group.

I was playing with some refurb ProV1Xs over the winter. I split the outer jacket on three of them.

I’ve tried several brands but my favorites are the Calloway Chrome Softs and the super hots. I probably loose 1 per round now.

I’ve found that after playing with the same ball for a while it will get scuffed up pretty bad anyway so it’s not a big deal when I lose it. I’ve gotten pretty strategic about it too. When I notice my ball is getting scuffed up, I’ll hang onto it and use it on a high risk shot instead of the good one.

Settled on the Srixon Q star tour 2 balls; $30/box but just had a deal for buy one get one free; so two doze for $30. Going to play twice in the next week to see how they feel. I'm hoping the soft feel and lower compression give me so more control.

I don't think I am good enough to be able to tell the difference between one ball and the next. My mom keeps buying me Pro V's for holidays and I feel bad playing with them because I certainly lose them. Not at an alarming rate, but I still lose them.

but like I said, I don't know shit about what ball I hit best. I just hit what I have in my bag.

Buy the best balls money can buy. Trust me, it will make a huge difference.

By the way, what course do you play?
