1. Bo Jackson, RB, Auburn – 1986 The two-sport tall tale weighed in at a chiseled 6’1”, 230 pounds before running an unofficial hand-timed 4.12 in the 40-yard dash — a jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring effort that is still a part of Combine folklore.
2. Tony Mandarich, OT, Michigan State – 1989 In hindsight, the most impressive thing the “Incredible Bulk” did was pass his steroid drug screening during the Combine. At 304 pounds, Mandarich ran a 4.65 in the 40, exploded for a 30” vertical and 10’3” broad jump, and ripped off 39 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.
3. Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland – 2006 Davis looked like a body builder or, at the very least, an actor from an Under Armour commercial en route to running a 4.38 in the 40, skying for a 42” vertical, 10’8” broad, and slamming 33 reps on the bench press.
4. Mike Mamula, LB, Boston College – 1995 After all these years, Mamula remains the go-to cautionary tale of the Combine. The BC beast vaulted up draft boards after a 4.58 in the 40, 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench, a 38” vertical and a 49-of-50 on the Wonderlic Test. Mamula never looked as good in pads as he did in shorts.
5. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor – 2012 The fastest quarterback in Combine history, RG3 was a track star on the fast track to NFL and commercial superstardom — with a blistering 4.41 in the 40-yard dash to go along with a dunk contest-worthy 39” vertical.
6. Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina – 2008 Before he became CJ2K, the gold-grilled CJ4.24 was the gold standard official record-holder in laser-timed 40-yard sprints, posting a 4.24 and hitting the first-round finish line in-stride. CJ has not, however, been able to set up a race against Usain Bolt.
7. Deion Sanders, CB, Florida State – 1989 The ultimate showman (and show-boater), Deion showed up fashionably late (and probably fashionably loud) to the Combine, then ran his 40-yard dash only once — in a time between 4.19 and 4.29, depending on whose hand-timed stop watch you trust. But Prime Time didn’t stop running once he hit the finish line; Sanders ran out of the building to a limousine waiting to take him to the airport.
8. Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech – 2007 With his draft stock holding strong near the top of the class, Johnson planned on kicking back and watching the festivities. But once the fireworks started, Megatron’s competitive juices started flowing and he decided he wanted to run after all. The only problem? He didn’t bring any track shoes. So Johnson borrowed a pair of spikes from East Carolina’s James Pinkney — then proceeded to run a blistering 4.32 in the 40.
9. J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin – 2011 In hindsight, the numbers that Watt put up at the Combine were a window into his dominant Defensive Player of the Year future. At 6’5”, 290 pounds with 11 1/8” hands and 34” arms, Watt ran a 4.84 in the 40, soared for a 37” vertical and 10’ broad jump, and threw up a long-armed 34 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.
10. Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State – 2008 One of the main reasons teams remain skeptical of off-the-charts Combine stats, Gholston was the classic “look like Tarzan, play like Jane.” In shorts and a muscle shirt, Gholston ran a 4.67 in the 40, had 37 reps on the bench and lifted off for a 35.5” vertical and 10.5” broad jump.

Stephen Paea set the NFL record for the bench press at the combine... That should probably make a freak combine athlete list somewhere.

Check out this kid in High School. Matt Poursoltani. 500 pounds 10 times. He also benched 700 pounds a year ago. Not sure what he will be like in a few years but he is damn impressive.

Ex-Oregon star Colt Lyerla located after escaping from state custody

Update: May 5 – 5:15 p.m. ET

After escaping from a Corrections Center, former Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla was located on Friday afternoon, according to multiple reports. A police spokesman said Lyerla was found after someone reported a drug overdose.

From OregonLive.com:

Lt. Henry Reimann, Hillsboro police spokesman, said officers encountered Lyerla at 1707 N.E. Parkside Drive after someone called about a man overdosing on drugs. He said he did not know exactly what time the incident took place.

Reimann said Lyerla attempted to flee, but he was apprehended and taken to the hospital for treatment. He will be booked into the Washington County jail after his release from the hospital, Reimann said.

Another bizarre chapter has been added to the Colt Lyerla story.

The former five-star recruit was a standout tight end at Oregon, but he left the team in 2013 just a few games into his junior year. Soon after, he was arrested for cocaine possession and has had a lengthening criminal history — mostly drug-related — ever since.

Most recently, Lyerla was serving a six-month sentence for drug possession at the Washington County Community Correction Center in Hillsboro, Oregon. However, per OregonLive.com, Lyerla escaped from the minimum-security facility (which provides work-release and substance abuse programs, among others) on Thursday. A warrant has subsequently been put out for his arrest.

From OregonLive.com:

Lyerla had been at the Washington County Community Correction Center serving out a six-month sentence for drug possession, county spokesman Philip Bransford said. At 4:55 p.m. Thursday, officials heard an alarm from dorm three.

County workers found an open window and an escape in progress. All residents were counted except for Lyerla. The dorm is on the first floor of the building, said Steve Berger, director of the Community Corrections Department.

Lyerla was sentenced in March after a judge found him guilty in February of possessing heroin. He was serving his sentence there for forgery charges and also had a probation violation for the earlier heroin conviction.

Because he escaped from custody, Lyerla now faces a felony escape charge.

Lyerla was the No. 26 overall recruit in the 2011 class out of Hillsboro High School. He committed to play for the in-state Ducks and enrolled early. He played as a freshman, catching seven passes for 147 yards and five touchdowns, before earning the starting role in 2012 as a sophomore. That season, he caught 25 passes for 392 yards and six scores. He also had 13 carries for 77 yards and a score on the ground.

Lyerla missed multiple practices leading up to the 2013 season because of what the team said were “personal issues.” He also sparked some controversy when he tweeted support for Sandy Hook conspiracy theories. He returned for the start of the season and played in two games but was held out of a game for what coach Mark Helfrich vaguely said were “circumstances.” Lyerla, who said he was sick, spoke out publicly about being upset with the way Helfrich characterized his absence.

After being kept at home for a game at Colorado in October of that year, Lyerla quit the team and declared for the NFL draft. Later that month, he was arrested for possession of cocaine.

Lyerla was not selected in the 2014 NFL draft, but he did sign as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers. During the preseason, Lyerla tore two ligaments in his knee and was placed on injured reserve. He was later waived from the team via an injury settlement and other than a brief stint in the Arena Football League, Lyerla has not played since.
