Good article Skinsdad. Wow - it sure doesn't sound like both sides are ready to kill each other unlike what is being portrayed in the media. It just sounds like the agent wants to get the most for his client (as he should) & the Redskins are - in a friendly manner - trying to get him to agree for less.

Can't wait to hear the different slant on this from morons like Florio, Steven A Smith & Bayless.

I don't think anyone in the media knows for sure what is going on with the KC negotiations. Which is why you are seeing many different views on what is going on. Just pure speculation and guess work with no real facts or inside knowledge.

This is good news. When Cousins & Co win ball games, he is very good. When Cousins & Co lose ball games, he has been pretty bad. Both parties need to meet in the middle and compromise on a fair contract for Cousins who is by the way, an evolving QB with a high ceiling. I have copied these numbers from a poster under the article posted by Dad. If this type of deal doesn't work for all, then I don't know what will. This seems fair for both sides.

Ben Posted:

Here is what the deal should look like starting with the cap hits:

2017: $17,000,000
2018: $20,000,000
2019: $23,000,000
2020: $27,000,000
2021: $30,000,000
2022: $33,000,000

That would be a six-year, $150 million contract with a $25M APY. It should have a $24M signing bonus which would be prorated against the cap at $4M/year. Then the 2017 and 2018 salaries should be fully guaranteed ($13M & $16M, respectively) and 2019 & 2020 salaries ($19M & $23M) guaranteed for injury only. Therefore $53M fully guaranteed with a total of $95M guaranteed.

Wouldn't it be just like the Redskins to sign him to an incredible deal and he starts to shit the bed again now that he aint playing to prove himself anymore. Then we get another notch on our belt for the worse signings in NFL history. I think as of right now we hold 5 of the top ten.

Interview w/ Cousins agent. Doesn't sound too bad. His agent sounds upbeat and nothing here indicates that Cousins wants out. This is encouraging.

The Washington Post reports the Redskins and franchise player Kirk Cousins have discussed a long-term deal that would pay Cousins $20 million per year.

The Post's Master Tesfatsion makes it clear the sides "aren't close" -- Cousins will certainly want more -- but it's a step in the right direction after Washington's max offer to Cousins was $16 million per year last offseason. Conceivably, the Redskins could continue to reduce GM Scot McCloughan's power, sign Cousins long term, then announce McCloughan's departure publicly while fingering him as the Fall Guy and reason Cousins wouldn't sign last year. Such an approach would make the current powers that be in D.C. look better, at least in the short term.

Sounds like the Skins want a deal in place before the start of free agency if at all possible. If they are offering $20M a year average, and Kirk is asking for $24M a year average, looks like $22M a year would be the break even point but it will likely cost a bit more guaranteed money than some will like.

Does Luck get 24M a year average?

Yeah, I saw this live. I stepped off the ledge because of it. It gave me a modicum of hope that they may still work out a deal.

So 20M is fair. Depending on g money. If he wants more than Luck I call unfair.

Brian Mitchell said it best..

If you think we can get some one better than Cousins, for less than what he is going to cost us.. you are fooling yourself.

they should meet in the middle at 22m. God knows what the gmoney would be. If he is holding out b/c he wants Lucks price or more than Luck I would cry foul.

ESPN's John Keim reports the Redskins' offer of $20 million per season was "not recent."

Per Keim, there hasn't been a "jump start" in talks. The sides appear to have made no tangible progress since the end of last season. Right or wrong, whenever Cousins signs on the dotted line, it's almost certainly going to be for at least $20 million annually.

I thought the SKins weren't allowed to talk contract talks with KC last year b/c he was playing on the tag. So how is this offer not recent?

Cry foul all you like. Who we going to get thats better for less??

Grap?? The Patriots want at LEAST a first rounder for him. And this is assuming he isnt the next Oswieler
McCarron?? The Bengals think they can get a first rounder for him.

Kaepernick will be available....

So for all the book reports written on how Cousins really isnt that good and isnt worth the money he will cost... we are back to the same question. Give me some one who IS better and available. Not a maybe, not a well this guy COULD get us eight wins. Because the plan should be to improve on last year.
