The Washington Post reports the Redskins have yet to make progress in long-term talks with free agent Kirk Cousins.
That's via "people familiar with the situation." Per reporter Mike Jones, the Redskins are also likely to use the non-exclusive franchise tag on Cousins, allowing him to negotiate with other teams. Cousins has been strongly linked to ex-Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, but the bombed-out Niners would have to surrender two first-round picks.

Consider your source. WP has been right about the inner workings of what is really happening at Redskins Park like never over the last couple of years. Jones needs to produce a couple of articles daily that result in hits. What better way in a slow news period than to speculate about conflict?

I would love it if a lot of posters here would do something that they were not able to do a year ago, that is, be correct in predicting a LTD this time around. Not throwing shade, but the optimistic view here has to have more than a few a bit edgy considering how things turned out then. It IS NOT a stretch to believe that things will play out similarly this year. If someone here can present a perspective that didn't exist a year ago, shows why this time around we don't get the same result or the reported Non exclusive tag, please present it!! Thanks.

I really believe if he gets slapped with the non exclusive tag he won't be here next year

Unless we are vastly over-rating the powers that are and their ability to figure things out, they had to know that Tagging him a year ago would lead to pretty much having to face repeating this all over again.

By doing this we could match any offer or take the draft picks. So we will know what his real market value is. I think its a smart play to go this route.

my question is if KC is such a bum why would anyone give up 2 first rounders for him and pay him a kings ransom in wages ? why give a 1st and another pick or combo of picks ?

if i am the skins and i am negotiating and you dont want to give me 2 first rounders then i am saying ok give me your 2017 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th rounder plus an 2018 3rd

so i am raping your draft this year

Unless it was in the heat of a moment kind of thing, who said that KC is a bum? The reason the compensation is what it is happens to be for the same reason that Kirk will be paid.....market value. We currently have him, if someone else wants him that's the price. Despite all of these differing threads, I still hold that there will be a deal signed here.

Here's what didn't exist a year ago. Bruce Allen has publicly stated that KC will be the skins QB for a long time. Also what didn't exist a year ago is the plethora of teammates saying the team needs to pay KC and get him under contract. Nether of those instances happened last year.

Bruce Allen??? Really...BRUCE FARKIN' ALLEN who has the managerial skills of Pepe le Pew, that's your source of comfort....well....OK!

Football players declaring the other football players should get paid handsomely, yep, no self interest there!

That's not the point. You asked for posters to offer something this year that is different from last. No-one from the FO was standing up and saying sign KC long term last year. And if you think that Bruce doesn't speak for Dan, then you are naive. As for his teammates, if they want him signed back in their own self interest, what does that tell you about what they think of him? They sure as hell weren't saying that about RG3. They practice with KC every day. You see him 16 games a year. But of course I guess your insight is better than theirs'? I'll take their opinions of KC any day over any poster on this board.

and lets not forget that potential FA's from other teams have had their agents state that they would advise them to sign with washington if KC is retained

If you're saying that Bruce Allen didn't have the same perspective a year ago, that' fair, but here's the truth....

Bruce Allen confident team will reach deal with Kirk Cousins

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2016/02/03/...

So glad that no one was saying this on 2-3-2016, must be an old Temptation's song playing in my head ("Just my Imagination")

BTW: it say nothing about what they think of him, only that they want to open, reopen, or continue to have another team willing to spend money on players, especially their own. Nice way to look at this business though, but truthfully, a lot of these same players will be looking for that same payout vein here or elsewhere themselves. It's all about self interest, or they would declare that they would be willing to take a lower offer to stay here themselves. Kirk may have left a personal impression on them, you know, something like "Kirk is a good Joe, pay the man." and that's probably as far as that perception of loyalty to him goes.

Man, do you actually believe the BS you write? Because I don't think anyone else does. Sorry Sty.

WOW you introduce Bruce Allen into this conversation and because I countered with what he said a year ago that you didn't know or remember and it's BS....Got it!

You give skills for hire to the highest bidder athletes a lot more credence than I do. Congratulations, you have a different opinion of them than I do.

No one is saying KC is a bum. If the Skins don't want to give the guy 90mg that is why he will be traded for two firsts. Simple as that. With the non-exclusive tag it allows teams to send in bids to see his true market value. If we think its fair market value for the player we sign him. If the number gets crazy we get two first round picks. Why is this so hard to understand?

Dude. Get this through your head. He isn't going to be traded for 2 1sts because no one is going to give us 2 1sts for him and then swallow that huge contract we had to give him to get him to sign. I'm a KC believer, but even I recognize that he is not worth that.

Fine that is your opinion. What if its offered jy? what do you say then? What if the 49ers offer KC 85mg and two first round picks. Do you do it? Cmon jy give me a real answer for once.

I'll chime in. The only way you take that offer is if you have decided that you are starting from ground zero and planning to rebuild again. You have immediately put your head coach in a lame duck situation. So unless the plan is to fire Gruden at the end of the season and start over with a new coach next year, even with the two first rounders its a bad deal.
