I think we had all a feeling we would be a fringe playoff team. I think the team is progressing, but it is painfully slow. While I am pleased that we did get above , I am frustrated because some of our problems were obvious and we all saw this going into the season. While SM has built a decent roster, freed up cap room and installed a build through the draft mentality, he made a huge mistake. Here are some of the mistakes he made and that must be corrected.

1. The biggest knock on him is was the complete lack of direction with the DLine. Its really inexcusable to be honest. We did next to nothing to address is. Throwing two journey men and a 5th round draft pick at the wall and praying that it works is irresponsible. We literally had the worst DLine in the league and we all knew that. Why in heavens name did he not do anything about it?

2. The defense has been largely neglected. The free agents outside of Norman have been a disaster. We can't take a dumpster diving mentality when it comes to free agents. Bruton and Reyes were laughable signings. The fact that Compton and Foster are starting shows you that we just don't have the necessary talent to compete. I love the heart and hustle but they just don't have the speed to get it done at a high level. I think we statistically have the worst defense in the NFL but we don't really address anything in free agency. I think we need to do what the Giants did last year and bring in 3 high priced free agents along the DLine and pass rushing spots. While Cravens and Fuller were higher picks, I would like to see us continue to use high draft picks on the defense and build.

3. We need to get a RB worth a darn. I love Kelly and Thompson, but they are back ups. We need to move on from Jones or either play him. The running game was substandard and we actually have a good OLine for once. We need to use a high draft pick on a RB as they typically don't work out in FA. We need to run the ball at least part of the time to make our offense better. I am shocked SM didn't see that and rolled the dice.

Outside of that, I would like to see us:

- Fire Barry and bring in someone else. I think he has shown us all he can and there appears to be more talented coordinators available. Please bring in Wade Phillips like we should have originally!
- Don't run from free agency. No need to be Vinny 2.0 but we can't build through the draft 100% and dumpster dive for bargains. We are going to have to open the pocket book to improve this defense. Use our cap wisely with smart deals on younger, healthier players. If you have to overspend on one or two younger, healthy and talented players, then do so.
- Bounce back with the draft. I loved the 2015 draft but the 2016 draft could have been better. I still didn't like the Doctson pick but whatever. For some reason, half of the draft class could not stay healthy and the other half didn't really improve. SM is known for his drafting ability so hopefully he bounced back.

You didn't address the KC situation. Do you pay him over 20M per season?

I don't think we have a choice do you? There isn't a better option on the market and there is nobody to move up for in the draft. I think a better running game would actually help KC be even better.

There is always a choice. He doesn't deserve that money right now. His ask is going to be 22-23M per season. How could SM even consider that.

I guess we tag him again, draft a QB in the 1st round or sign a FA. What I can tell you is that you need to have a QB to win in this league and they don't grow on trees.

True. So we give him 24M. Why? We are going to give him that kind of money to be a .500 team?

Maybe resigning kirk for whatever it costs is the right decision. I'm not really sure. But I don't think there not being a better option immediately available is a good reason to keep him.

I have no idea how much money he is going to want. I think he wants to be here and we need him. I agree that we shouldn't pay a QB 24 million to be a .500. The problem is that its not Cousins fault we are .500. It was the substandard defense, lack of a running game and general lack of talent on our team.

I think the Cousins situation will get worked out to be honest with you and its not my concern. My concern is the failure to address the DLine year after year and the failure to add talent to the defense. That is my major concern and I don't know if the FO views it as much of a problem that most people do.

Let me add just one more to your list....getting more draft picks! Yes they are wonderful to have but the price that you must pay in order to get them as we have lately, is in trading the opportunity to get the more highly skilled player in favor of two lesser skilled players. This team needs difference makers on it in as many places as they possibly can get them. trading down, unless we get extremely lucky, begats projects!

Sty my guess is you think the Pats are doing the right thing. They acquire as many picks as the can each year. The idea is no one hits on all the picks but the more picks you have the better chance you have to hit on those picks. Just a thought.

I don't believe that any method is wrong, on the one hand you have a numbers game while on the other you get better quality (supposedly) For our team, particularly on defense we are stocked to the gills with players the majority of which are either just below average, average or pretty good. What's needed are guys who are very good to excellent (elite if you will) the numbers game greatly diminish our chances of landing guys like that so I think we focus on getting higher quality guys (by rating and our scouting reports) because the need is greater.

Can we please stop with the Wade Phillips talk already? There was no indication that he wanted to come here when the Denver job with all that talent was available to him

What is the thing you hear most from coaches as the keys to the game? We need to run the ball, stop the run and put pressure on the QB. This team does none of these things and that's where the problem is. I am not putting it all on him but it is time we realize Rob Kelly has to be upgraded. And cleary both lines need to be addressed. The running game both ways is a joke.

Damn for a winning team they have a ton of needs: safety, x 2, LG, DL x 3, ILB, RB. And some want to throw away a 4,700 yard QB and spend a first on a project.

Biggest concern in my eyes is how this team entered games with playoff implications vs the Cards, Panthers and Giants in basically a 5 weeks span. Does this team has holes ? Sure, especially on defense. Still it can't excuse or explain what we saw on the field in those games. Flat, unprepared, outcoached and it's not the first time we see that under Gruden. I will give him the fact his team has never give up but after 3 seasons there are major concerns with Gruden's abilities to lead this team to the SB.

On point again. Maybe KC isn't, nor ever will be, elite. But unless we spend those precious draft picks on putting together some kind of defense, it will make no difference who the QB is. KC has proven he can win in this league. What he hasn't proven is he can win when the other parts of the team don't work. And there are very few QBs to ever play this game that had this ability. SO stop searching as it is fools gold. Recognize what we have in a QB who, while not perfect, is pretty damn good. Then use the resources we have to build a team around him. Don't even talk about using our first couple of picks on chasing a better QB. Invest in the defense for whomever our QB will be. Because unless we wake up in August and Aaron Rodgers is our QB, we have got to be able to stop even a bad running team (like the Giants) from gashing us for over 160yds on the ground.
