A martyr eh. I'm not seeing that. He'd be a pile of entrails just like Glen and Abraham were. Negan just wants to show everyone who has the biggest dick and the biggest crew, most guns etc etc over and over.
Did you not listen to Negens speech?

Negan thrives on control and fear. He's a maniac.

Killing Rick is not near as satisfying as making him his bitch.
And if he kills Rick, he will need to have another lineup in a few weeks to make sure the new leader is appropriately pussified.

Negan wants Alexandria to be productive. At his heart, he is a businessman. It is in his best interest to have a decent leader in Alexandria. Rick is clearly a good leader. His people respect him. Might as well well keep him in place, while still castrating him IN FRONT OF HIS PEOPLE. Puppet placed.

If the Alexandrians overthrow him, so be it. They don't have a martyr, and they are thrown into disarray. Not ideal, but better than having a significant group (remember, they killed about 60 of his people) focused on killing him.

That's my take. Maybe I'm missing out because I haven't hit Neegan yet in the comics, but he's a garden variety run of the mill sadist from what I can see.

Would have been better, and more fresh had they just finished this last season. Even not knowing exactly who it was, some of the emotion wasn't there. It's been talked about too long for it to be fresh still. They fucked up. But it was still good.

Side note - Chris Hardwick. I want to punch him in the face. Does he strike anyone else as a yuppie douche bag? Maybe it's just me and how guys who "mess their hair up on purpose to look cool" annoy me. That and he keeps talking about feelings. It's a show. Nobody needs to talk through their feelings after watching it. It's a story. You either like it or you didn't. Feelings. And wind blown dude cuts. Bah!

I agree with this. The Carl/Rick scene got to me way more because it's hard to get too emotional over something I've talked about/thought about for 6 months....not to mention spoilers. I think back to when Carol killed Lizzy after she killed her sister. That episode fucked with me for a long time after. But if they had left part of it as a cliffhanger, it wouldn't have messed with me as much.

FTFY.

Businessmen understand the utility of the carrot as well as the Lucille.
Fair enough. But he sees himself more as a businessman. He still wants Alexandria to produce, and killing Rick does not aid in that task.

As far as the cliffhanger goes, I was thinking a lot about that while watching last night.

Last nights episode was near perfect. I would not have wanted it shortened. A lot of the emotion would have been lost. It was a journey that needed to take its time.

So how could they have done issue 100 in a single episode? Could they have aired 6.16 as 6.15 instead? Could they have made 6.16 a two hour episode?

As a viewer, I would have liked a longer 6.16, but business-wise, that doesn't make much sense. It stays truer to the books to have the thing as a single-serving moment. It really worked well in that format in the books. But on a tv show, the details of pulling that off get tricky. Making the episode too long could have the side effect of losing the intensity. Making 6.16 6.15 instead loses the benefit of a solid episode as an anchor-episode (though GoT doesn't tend to worry about this).

In summary, I guess I grudgingly forgive the show for the cliffhanger. I still think it was stunt-writing vs solid-writing, but that is the world we live in, so I guess I just have to accept that.

For the record, I think this situation should lend itself to a pretty good season. I've never read the comics, so I'm also interested to see what this Kingdom is all about.

I thought the first episode was well done. Other than wishing Abe/Glenn were knocked off at the end of last season so I would've had the emotion attached to it, I thought the story played out perfectly with mindfuck on Rick and kidnapping Daryl. If Daryl wasn't all fucked up in the head before, causing Glenn's death and being away from his group certainly is going to get him there.

On a side note... I'm drawing a complete blank on Carol. Dude was pushing her around in a wheelchair. Can anyone refresh me on what I'm forgetting with that story line? Last I remember of her she shot some dudes in the street after leaving Alexandria.

One of the dudes she shot at tracked her down and shot her in the leg. Morgan came upon them and shot the guy. Then two dudes from the Kingdom came upon them and presumably brought Morgan/Carol to the Kingdom.

Did anyone else notice at the end of the episode, one of the Saviors stopped to take a picture of Glenn with a Polaroid? Goes back to when he saw those Polaroids hanging at the Saviors compound that they stormed.

Also, it appears Maggie will end up having a healthy kid based on that table scene. Glenn had a boy on his lap.

That was a hallucination by Rick. Doesn't mean anything.

If you noticed, Glenn and Abe were also at that table, and they are clearly dead now.

I got a question for book readers, and please put your thoughts in a spoiler tag...

What will the finale be this season?

Dwight offering his services to Alexandria? Although, I suspect they will kill Dwight and just have Darryl take over his storyline.

Or

Rick vs Negan, mano a mano?

Or something else?

This show generally doesn't do "doesn't mean anything" types of stuff. Those kinds of details are what makes it great.

I don't think I saw that part.
