After watching four games, I get the feeling that the lack of tackling isnt about talent, its coaching.

They are stressing take aways more than solid tackling. How many missed tackles have we seen that were more a result of trying to strip the ball, than trying to get the guy on the ground. Kinda like coaching a DB to get the ball on the ground and break up the pass.

If that is the case, I could almost be OK. But, I don't see it. I see us constantly hitting the wrong hole and flat missing the tackle. There are a couple misses that could fall under your idea but not as a whole.

I read somewhere that Compton and Foster are constantly going to the wrong gap.

Manny and Bullock have both mentioned it. Think Keim did too IIRC

Manny...

  • Linebackers Will Compton and Mason Foster have had their ups and downs this season. Honestly, it's been more downs than ups. Both have been caught filling the wrong run lanes several times. Not to mention, Compton has looked pretty stiff and slow in coverage. On the bright side, Compton did force a key fumble today.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to see them put Spaight in a few series next game as long as his concussion issues have abated.

I have been saying all year the ILBs were a huge problem and they remain a huge problem as is the tacking. But the missed tackles appear to be after the RB runs through a hole the size of my living room so the problem starts up front. Watching our NT is a joke, he gets manhandled every down. Why? Because he is not a nose tackle.

Sure coaching may be an issue but this is simply horrible talent in the front 7.

Fundamental tackling 101. Put a shoulder on the ball carrier, and wrap him up. How many times have we seen guys trying to rip the ball out instead of trying to get the guy on the ground. I dont disagree that we lack the talent to run a 3-4, but Im talking about how many missed tackles are not due to guys just being out of position. How many yards did Dallas and the Browns get after contact because we were too worried about trying to get the ball instead of getting the ball carrier on the ground.

Apparently our secret strategy on D is instead of forcing a punt...force a fumble after letting the other team move down the field as far as a punt...:)

Oh I agree, we all set it too. My point is it's not just the tackling. The DL is getting move out like they are on roller skates and that's because they simply are not very good players.

We are talking about guys who have been playing this game for 10 or more years. Especially on defense, the first thing you are taught is a form tackle. Unless you are taught differently, tackling 101 should be instinct by this point. I agree Ziggy Hood as our starting NT is like any one named Clinton as President at this point... just a bad idea. But IM seeing way too many attempts at forcing turnovers that turn into missed tackles for my liking.

And I am seeing too many gaping holes for running backs to get to the second level.

I think it is both, lack of talent and coaching. Coaching wise before each game a def cord has a philosophy, but if that philosophy is not working there needs to some alterations. His def defense has not improved an inch from last yr. Also he has a bad track record also. To me I do not like JB philosophy, never have. It’s is to vanilla.

However to play any type of def scheme you must have good tacklers. Now to JB defense he really does not have the talent to run his scheme b/c we have not drafted any talent for him. This is why Gruden will keep JB. Barry was the lb coach for the super bowl Tampa Bay. Remember that def was designed to limit big plays rather than create them. Keep everything in front of you but this does not work if you can’t tackle. Yesterday I saw 2, 3 missed tackles on many different plays. To many yac yardage. David Burton is really cut material. Same issue we had last yr nothing new here. We are being saved by TO's however we can't count on them all the time.

These boys here in big D run a similar scheme to JB. How many times did our WR get behind their safeties. We have the same problem. No WR should beat your safeties in this scheme.

Tampa had Simeon Rice a very good pass rusher, Sapp in the middle, some very fast Lb’s and def backs who can tackle very well. Again we need to add speed in the back 7 who can tackle well and force more 4th downs and at least one good pass rusher. Like I said before the season started it will be bottoms up every weekend. We are defenseless.

Except the hole isn't gaping if it is filled by a LB. Thus we are talking about Compton and Foster filling a hole.

Good grief @ that 3rd down conversion rate. That's an indication nothing concerning defense, coaching, scheme, tackling, coverage, pass rushing, talent, etc is worth a nasty bloody fuck.

I think all of these statements are true in part. Our ILB has been very poor. DL play has been bad and there have been a number of instances where are trying to strip the ball when they have been trying to strip the ball instead of putting the guy on the ground.

Just curious, how does a player make a tackle if he can't shed the blocker in front of him, is moved so far from the newly created hole or in some cases were never intended to start in an NFL game except in a pinch?

I believe that it is NOT exactly coaching, but coaching that realizes the inherent weaknesses on his team and has decided to use turnovers as the only rational method of stopping the opposition.
