Game Thread: Week 3: Redskins @ Giants

Like I said before I know Murphy had no idea that there was a penalty on the Giants. I just feel that he could of easily recovered the ball in bounce and avoid the penalty. Why do I have to keep on repeating myself. I just saw the play again an no Giant defenders were around him.

how is there a possibility of a return when there was no defender there? Every time Murphy makes a play am I going to hear it from you guys? I said he was a backup st player and you guys freaked. Guess what, that is exactly what he is. He has every opportunity to flash now b/c Smith and kerrigan are off to very slow starts.

b/c it saves 15 yards. If you bobble the ball out of bounce is it a penalty?

dean feels like he has one thread to make him not look like he is clueless. He never let go of the Murphy hate, you don't expect him to now.

The Redskins needed the right time to try the fake, having noticed on film what the Giants do in certain situations.

For example, when teams are close to midfield and will end up using a pooch punt -- trying to get the ball inside the 20-yard line instead of booming one -- the cornerback to that side, Trevin Wade, would let the gunner on that side -- in this case, Quinton Dunbar, a former receiver -- go.

That meant he’d be running open. Dunbar is a former receiver; Way can throw the ball. So the Redskins waited for the right time and found it: Fourth-and-12 from their own 48-yard line, trailing 24-23.

"The reward I thought outweighed the risk in that position," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "With Dunbar running it, he’s got good hands. Although, we moved him to corner for a reason, because he didn’t have great hands. But we did it in practice and Tress Way has a great arm -- very accurate."

A little background on Way: He’s a former baseball infielder and his brother, Cole, is a pitcher in the Kansas City Royals organization. But it’s been a few years since Tress Way had thrown a pass in a football game.

"The last time was when we were in the playoffs my junior year of high school," Way said. "I used to kick field goals, and the snap went over the holder’s head. I picked it up and threw in the end zone for a two-point conversion. That’s the last time I threw a ball in a game."

Yet there he was Sunday, lofting a ball to Dunbar. But the Redskins felt it was a good risk, because with Wade letting him go, he’d have to scramble to recover. And that could lead to a penalty as special teams coach Ben Kotwica explained to Way.

"Ben said one of two things will happen," Way said. "It’s either incomplete, but they’ll call holding. Or he lets him go and you put it on him."

They had both: Way completed a 31-yard pass and Wade was also called for holding.

"I was pumped we declined the penalty and I got the yards and a completion," a beaming Way said outside the Redskins' locker room Sunday.

"Jay told me all week we would run it at some point in the game," Dunbar said. "On third down, coach came up to me and said we’re going to call this play so be ready. I went out ... and I made the play."

OLB Preston Smith made positive strides against the New York Giants

The early narrative on second year OLB Preston Smith is that he is struggling early this season. Smith, in his first season as a starter, has yet to secure himself a sack. However, you'd be naive to suggest his level of play has regressed due to his sack total, or lack thereof. In fact, I'd argue that Smith is progressing.

Of the first three games this season, Preston Smith has had impact in two of the three. Per my personal film study, Week One against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith had three pressures and was hands down the most consistent pass rusher for the team that day. When Washington played the Dallas Cowboys in week two, he only created one QB pressure but spent more time in coverage than I've seen him play in the past. Week Three, however, the former Mississippi State Bulldog had his best game of the season. Smith had four solo tackles, two pressures, a batted pass and forced two holding penalties. Pro Football Focus labeled Preston Smith's performance against New York, "the most complete" for the Redskins on defense.

Washington has been compensating a bit for their lack of talent on the defensive line. They've been using a lot of two down lineman looks and bringing in OLB Trent Murphy to be that "big-tweener." Murphy, by the way, has benefited big time from that extra muscle he gained in the off-season. He's been able to secure himself three sacks and two forced fumbles in rotational play.

For Preston Smith, the sacks will come. His biggest issue so far has been finishing his rushes. But I see progress in his game. He's playing the run better and affecting plays even when he doesn't get to the QB. Disruption is what you want. Give it time. The numbers will come.

Preston is young and will be fine. His rushing defense has not been good. I did not see where Manny addressed that. Then too you could say the Redskins rushing defense has not been good. I am not the least be worried about Smith.

Good article. RK did have a strip sack against Pitt but other than that he has been non existent. Smith had his best game Sunday. I noticed that. I don't know why they put him in coverage on third downs. Doesn't make sense to me. As far as Murphy goes, he is doing well in the backup role. If he keeps this up he is on pace for 12 sacks and 8FF for the year.

The bottom line here is that these three guys have to get better. We rarely send pressure with Barry so the only pas rush we have is these three guys and Baker. If Smith can become a pass rushing specialist then that will help out big time. RK is just not making an impact. I have no idea what is wrong with this guy.

Agree, also think Kirk should have said one, two open throw to WR or 28th row. BUT most of all Grudens should have called TO as soon as JReed caught the ball at the 5. They potentially could have had two or three attempts in the end zone. He blamed Cousins and IMO it was a coaching mistake, followed by a QB mistake with bad blocking. Tackles knew the ball had to come out fast, but they blocked like that too. Not good by a lot of people.

I don't know X's and O's well enough to analyze the fine details outside of seeing sacks but I am glad that you and others are seeing progress and not regression from Preston.

Wondering if there is some lingering health concern, maybe groin, for Kerrigan? What think you?

I just wonder who is responsible for calling to's? Is it KC or Gruden. Not calling TO after the Reed catch was one of the biggest blunders I ever seen. Could of cost us the game. There was no upside in spiking the ball in that situation.
