Film review: Kirk Cousins, enigma

it is verse the packers and it shows the good and the bad vs them

with experience i think he will continue to improve and do great things for us

but he has to show it on the field

I think he has already. How many Redskin records did he break last year? He also got progressively better, not worse. Wouldnt be surprised if Kirk bolts next year. Skins will have no other option then to tag him again. What a joke. If he does well he'll break the bank and any FA next year. Skins blew it imo. KC may never be great but he'll always be very good, and those "very good" QB's arent on every team... They needed to sure him up.

IF we stay relatively healthy, and the defense can manage to NOT blow double digit leads... Kirk Cousins may become the highest paid QB in NFL History... at least until 2018. If he manages to be average, He will get $20 million per year or more from some one. The only way he losses out in this thing is if he ends up benched by mid season.

This playing with tag will make Kirk play cautiously, but that may bode well for our season. Record says a lot too. He could be average and the team gets to and wins a playoff game he has leverage then as well. I have a feeling his belief and confidence within himself is thru the roof. This year I think he'll be above average or great... He wont suck.

Either he performs to a level where he gets paid big time... in which case we are fucked. Because if he can demand and get $25 million plus, it means some one we should resign aside from Kirk, we wont be able to afford.

Or he sucks, and we are in the hunt for a QB... in which case we are fucked.

If he plays average, and is not tag worthy.... we are fucked.

Bottom line... I think we get fucked on this one.

Breaking records is as much a function of the way the game is played today as it is performance. Did Kirk really play better than Ryp in '91? Not IMO. Ryp was really good for 16 games, then got better when the stakes got higher. Kirk was not yet his numbers look better, again a function of the changes in the rules and offensive philosophy as much as anything. Ryp looked like the real deal after that season too, so did Griff even with the injury concerns. To a lesser extent Schroeder, Frerotte, and Campbell all looked like they may be good too at one time. Too assume Kirk will always be very good is way premature.

True but you have to remember that KC had no running game last year. Ryp had a better oline and running game. The way I look at it is that KC has the best talent around the Skins have had in years. He doesn't have to be great to be successful in our offensive system. I think he will get 30 total TD's this year. Hopefully more. Lets just hope that the running game can produce 10 TD's this year. A better running game will take more pressure off KC and actually should have a better year than last year. With another division win SM will give KC his long term deal. Even if we lose in the first round like last year, I believe he will get his long term deal. For us to cut ties with KC he would really have to choke big time.

I don't disagree with you about football today and inflated numbers. Just one question? What other Redskin QB has done that since the game has evolved?

I agree it is too early to assume he will always be good. I still think if you are pretty sure you were going to pay him the tag this year and next year then you could have agreed to a deal at $44 million guaranteed. As I said before if Cousins and his agent balked at that number then let him play at the Tag and see how he does.

He's going to get paid! All starting QB's get paid more than they should. Welcome to 2016 gentlemen.

if you look at the packers game he made the right reads on most occasions but didnt get the ball there . late he forced things to his playmakers but i feel we can easily work with that

It's hard to say exactly when the game evolved. But let's say for argument's sake the last 15 years. When you consider the list of Redskins QBs in that timeframe consists of names like Ramsey, Campbell, Grossman, Beck etc well I think it's clear that Kirk being the best is a tallest midget situation.

Again I'm on record as wanting him signed to a long term deal. I think it's worth the risk, he's certainly shown that kind of upside. I'm just putting to bed the argument that his Redskins records are all that impressive and he has proven to be at worst very good going forward.

There is a very likely third option: he plays OK. 25 TDs, 15 Ints. He has some good moments and some bad ones where he gives games away with turnovers or failure to move the team in a 7-9 season. Then his price goes down but as mentioned in a league desperate for QBs someone will make him a pretty big offer. Then what does the team do?

Oh I don't think you put to bed an argument that his season wasn't very good. He was 5th in QB rating and 6th in QBR rating during the last season of the era you mention and against all of his peers. What we can't know is whether it is repeatable for the next 7 or 8 years.

Yeah I worded that post poorly. Of course his season was very good, close to great even with the poor early games. I was addressing the argument that these records meant it was the greatest season a Redskins QB has ever had, which was implied, and guarantees that his floor for the next decade is "very good". Last season guarantees nothing.

I don't disagree with you DGF, it was only one year. I am not ready to say he is the QB we have been waiting for but I would have paid for two years guaranteed. Scot has a lot better track record than me though.

In fairness, Scots track record with QBs is not as strong as his track record with other positions.
