So Luck gets
  • $44M guaranteed at signing ($32 MM signing bonus paid out over two years + 2016 salary)
  • Every other year is guaranteed on the 5th day of the league year
So Miller gets

  • $39MM guaranteed at signing

Luck def signed a team friendly deal

I would pay Luck $5MM more than Von. He is a top QB in a league where Brock got $18 MM per year.

The Luck contract will hurt Von in the court of public opinion.

All of Luck's post 2016 salaries are guaranteed on the 5th business day just like Denver wants in Millers contract.

Miller must still be using Suh's first 3 years fully guaranteed. I'm not sure Denver will ever match that . No one else has that kind of guarantee but we know many teams will do that if Miller hits FA.

Solution:

Miller needs to come off the 3 year fully guaranteed
the Broncos should be willing to come up to $42 million paid in the first two years, agree to a big signing bonus (dead money so threat of cut is reduced) and give a favorable vesting date for his third year injury only guarantee.

I still think Von is trying to maximize early money becuase any suspension likely would void guarantees of future salary. I'm sure this is still an issue with Denver and their perception of Von Miller even though he is out of the program. Maybe they are leary of Miller once Ware leaves.

All very good thoughts. This seems to be the part that Miller is struggling with in wanting that 3rd year fully guaranteed. From the sound of the Broncos first contract offer the 3rd year was all but guaranteed. The dead money hit would have been too great to cut him. Now they can resolve some of this by making the 3rd year fully guaranteed after the 1st year of the contract is completed and he is still on the roster on the 5th day of the league year kind of thing just like the Eagles did with Fletcher Cox. This helps the Broncos out by making it where they don't have to come up with $60 million all in 1 day and it should satisfy Miller in that 3rd year is 99.9% guaranteed to him. So I would call that a win/win but then again Von Miller's camp might be looking at it as "We want to beat Suh's deal or no deal." I hope they are not looking at it that way as Miller's situation is much different than Suh's when he hit the open market.

The highest likelihood is that this deal gets done within 0-48 hours until the deadline. The Broncos want it done - Miller wants it done - Miller's agent probably has been spending his cut in his mind, or his spouse is spending it in her mind - the deal will get done.

(I said the same thing about Osweiler - eventually - if I hold firm - I will get it right).

This is where to me they are all still thinking as ex-players and Elway's role has completely shifted. This is Elway working hard to protect the Broncos from seeing a huge downfall down the road. With Von there are things from his past that yes should make Elway have a bit of hesitation. While it is great that Von has been clean for 2-years we also must remember his mentor that has helped keep him on track for the past 2 years will be gone after this season. What happens when Von isn't around Ware every single day? Not like Von has surrounded himself with the best people as we have seen plenty of photos of him and Manziel hanging out. So I completely understand Elway's hesitation from just going crazy contract wise.

Once a deal is done - the narrative will shift from Elway the bad guy - to Elway the great negotiator. It will all be forgotten by training camp.

This really is the worst time of year football wise. Fans panic and the media knows this all too well so they sell it that way for clicks. About can't go to any major sports pages at this time.

But they do understand the impact and impression it has on other players and the perception of the FO in negotiations when all the other deserving top players from Von's class have been locked up. Denver and Von's less than ideal negotiations won't be looked at as team friendly by future potential signees. JMO

Good point. Although Elway did this same thing with DT last year and I didn't hear these guys speaking up like this and thinking it was hurting the Broncos chances with future players or thinking it was changing the perception of the Broncos FO.

Stokley's argument, and Al's as well, would be that DT and Von aren't comparable. Von is the most important player on the team, not something anyone would say about DT. And their take is that "special players" get treated differently that any other player on the team.

I'm just passing along players' perspectives.

And I kind of get that. At the same time I hated in sports when I was in High School that certain players got special treatment. I understand Von Miller has great value to this franchise but I also don't think Elway should completely change the way he negotiates just because it is Von Miller compared to say Chris Harris or DT.

I'm also of the notion that I do think the media is hyping this up more than what is actually going on behind closed doors. Such as Elway and Von took some time to talk at the ring ceremony away from everybody. From what I understand that conversation went well so I think Von knows Elway respects him and thinks the world of him as a player and I hope Von knows that Elway is negotiating the way he is because he has 52 other players to think about in building a roster.

The Broncos and Von Miller's camp have restarted the negotiations this week in hopes of getting a deal done. Doesn't mean they will but usually a good sign if they are starting this early before the deadline that both sides want to get something done. Man I hope they don't wait until the final hour to get this done like last year with DT.

From what I understand the Broncos reached out to Von's camp last week wanting to get back to the table. Von's camp is holding a very hard line that they want at least $60 million in fully guaranteed money and any deal below that will not be accepted and shouldn't even be brought to the table. An offer could be made to Von's camp by the end of the week. My guess is the Broncos have time to make 2 more offers. One this week and then one more right before the deadline. I'm hoping this one though blows Miller's camp away as I don't see this as being one of those situations where Elway should be trying to penny pinch his way to a deal.

I'm betting this gets settled well below $60 guaranteed.

Have to see. I tend to agree with you on this. The lost wages from sitting out a year even if he gets a mega deal from some other team next year would be hard pressed to make up that type of money. So while sitting out a year is a threat he can make we have also seen the idea of losing that much money cause a lot of players that threatened to sit out decide to still play for the year. Sean Gilbert was the last man to do it back in 1997.

And looking at the Broncos last offer honestly it wasn't as far off as so many try to make it sound. Yes they didn't guarantee the 3rd year but with signing bonus and other bonuses the idea of cutting him that 3rd year would have been with a huge dead money hit. I doubt the Broncos unless Von Miller had fallen back into drugs and such would have cut him. They couldn't do it for injury as that would make that 3rd year fully guaranteed so really off the field issues or the complete collapse of his game on the field would be the only reason and like I said at still a pretty hefty penalty cap wise to the Broncos. So I think if they up the offer of how much of the 3rd year is guaranteed or design the contract more like Fletcher Cox's I have a hard time seeing Von turn that down.

Elway would be a genius if he can get Von to sign for less guaranteed money than cox
Hard to see Von settling for less than cox
Fletcher's 3rd year becomes guatenteed sometime early in the 2nd year

I don't see how Cox got 63 Miller would take anything less then 65. I hope the 60 will end up working but, its hard to see Miller's camp settling at 60.. It isn't helping with the huge NBA contracts that have happened in FA .either. I'm expecting 70 mil guaranteed to get Miller signed.
