ASHBURN - The Washington Redskins continued OTA practices on Wednesday with a two-hour session. Some observations:
--University of Richmond grad Reggie Diggs, a wide receiver, was not part of the workout. Coach Jay Gruden said Diggs recently had his knee scoped - the team is hopeful he'll return for training camp.
--Receiver Josh Doctson was also out, having injured his foot on Tuesday. This is the second injury to the same leg in two weeks for Doctson, who said he'll be more cautious with his return this time around.
--There was a heavy percentage of the 11-on-11 time devoted to the run, which is always particularly hard to evaluate in a non-contact situation. Matt Jones is the team's lead back, but it's hard to know whether the unit has made any progress without seeing them play at full speed.
--There were a handful of dropped passes, though the routes run today were often challenging ones. Rashad Ross, Jamison Crowder and Ryan Grant took the bulk of the catches.
--Rookie running back Keith Marshall seemed adept at catching passes in limited reps. Matt Jones nearly had a diving end zone catch, but watched it slip from his hands.
--There was lots of work at cornerback for Dashaun Phillips, who played well in the final weeks of 2015 for the Redskins before getting hurt. He could be in line for an increased role this year.
--Desean Jackson was once again absent from the workouts, which were voluntary.
--Virginia Tech's Kendall Fuller was basically a full participant. At this point, it would be a shock if he isn't 100 percent when the regular season rolls around.
--If Shawn Lauvao returns in time for training camp, it will be a fascinating battle between him and Spencer Long. If Lauvao is at 100 percent he's clearly the better of the two, but Long is making strides.
--Linebacker Will Compton's leadership skills stood out on Wednesday. The defense was doing work identifying formations, and Compton wasn't just calling out plays, but encouraging his teammates to take an active role in the process.
