I would loooove a bonified stud HC like Coughlin.

Bonified stud HC who's went 6-10, 6-10, 7-9, and 9-7 the last 4 years. Yes an impressive overall resume when you have 2 Super Bowl titles, and I think he's done a great job as a leader for that organization. I just think the game as passed him by at this point, and I don't see him as the savior like everyone else does. He'll put together a few solid seasons, and then what? We're onto our next coach again in another 2-3 years when Coughlin decides to hang it up. He's turning 70 this summer and no has ever coached past 72 years of age. Coughlin is currently the 3rd oldest Head Coach in NFL history. It's just not a hire that gives me any hope for the future. The game has changed a lot in recent years, and I feel like it has passed him by.

That "passed him by" is an over generalization. The game doesn't pass anyone that's in it. He can coach a few years and then you can promote the OC or DC. Not a huge dilemma.

Changed in 4 years?

He couldn't get the defense fixed with those players in New York. That'll happen to long tenured coaches. That doesn't mean he can't get this defense playing well with these players here. Change of scenery should be good for him and revitalize him.

Just one aspect here, but something Walter Thurmon said about Coughlin a while back.

"Coach Coughlin is the same type of person, but we battled through injuries last season. Yes, he's a little old-school, but he's starting to come around to the times. He doesn't believe in the sport-science aspect like Coach Carroll or Coach Kelly and the newfound technology for the players. His style takes a hit, because he doesn't believe in this aspect. He believes in winning, but he doesn't believe in the modern medicine to progress the players to that next level."

He's an old school coach, and his leadership with translate no matter what. Yet the game isn't what it used to be, and over looking a simple thing like modern medicine and up to date technology doesn't sit well. Yeah we already have all that stuff here, I know. I just don't see this as a home-run hit like most do.

Really annoyed Hue Jackson doesn't even get an interview here. We all want that leader type, someone who can take command of the team, captain of ship, yes Coughlin is that type, but at 70 years old I just don't think he's the answer at this point in his career. Someone like Jackson can also command the respect of his players, but he's also younger with plenty of experience, and he's innovative….yet we can't even get him in for an interview?

That would be my succession plan. I'm not excited by any names out there. disappointed if they don't consider McDermott. He's young, and even though not the architect of the Panthers defense, he runs it very well. He has very good potential to become a real good HC.

Coughlin is a great hire because he will steward the ship in transition for the next few years. Get it back on course and hand it off to someone in better shape.

We will be in better shape once our GM, or GM's, start hitting on some draft picks -- especially a QB. We need a leader at head coach who can install some continuity and a future for this team. Going through head coaches every 2-3 years doesn't exactly create continuity, regardless of how good of a leader Coughlin has proved to be.

Yep..the key is the DRAFT. HC is secondary to top notch GM imo. You can fire a coach after 2 years (although its obviously not ideal). Cant have draft picks back.

Thats why Im not too optimistic no matter who we get to coach the team. Because Lawyer Howie is gonna be making the picks.

But....our best best at HC is to get Coughlin who is PROVEN. THat way if we still suck in a couple of years, Jeff will have no choice but to finally look at Howies sorry ass. Instead of just blaming some OC who has never coached before.

And the bolded - the not believing in sports science - is a very bad thing to me. Extremely bad thing. The Giants have been BY FAR the team that has suffered the most from injuries over the past three years. The Eagles the least. And sports science as well as Coughlin's antipathy to it have everything to do with it.

With Coughlin running the show, expect players to go down all over the place with all kinds of injuries, many injuries that could have been prevented - and are prevented by sports science.

And Hue Jackson not getting an interview has a lot to do with Roseman (allegedly what got Jackson pushed out in Oakland - among other things - was him wanting to have a bigger say over the players made available to him (not surprising based on Oakland's inability to bring in talent by FA or draft).

He got fired when they changed GMs as is customary. So...no.

I get it why you guys want Coughlin, I'm just not very hyped about it because I know change is coming in another 2-3 years again, but if we can't land a good HC now I guess it doesn't matter. Need some big drafts.

Don't be an agist.

Coughlin is the best thing out there.

His methods work.

Why no?

Hell, the guy has an 8-8 record with a crap team. Not a coach worth keeping?

BTW, this - Jackson wanting a bigger say in personnel - was mentioned on IIRC 97.5 WIP by one of the people they called in (again, not Eckel) as one of the reasons why the new regime let him go.

That's not what happened. He was the HC when Al died and he took over some GM responsibilities. They re-organized the front office, fired hue and hired a scrub.

Would be ok with Coughlin as HC, especially if he could convince McAdoo to come over with him, in a couple of years or so the reins go smoothly over to him.
