CINCINNATI – Guard Jarron Cumberland has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Cincinnati and play basketball for the Bearcats beginning with the 2016-17 season, head coach Mick Cronin announced Wednesday.

Cumberland, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound guard from Wilmington, Ohio, averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists as a junior at Wilmington High School last season. He helped lead the Hurricane to a 24-2 record while earning First Team Associated Press Division I All-Ohio accolades a year ago.

Cumberland has been evaluated as a four-star prospect and ranks among the top 100 players in the nation according to Rivals, ESPN, Scout and 247 Sports. He averaged 17.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals during AAU action with King James (Ohio) this summer, later earning Third Team All-Peach Jam honors during Nike EYBL action.

“Jarron is a great young man from a wonderful family and is one of the best guards in the country,” Cronin said. “He has size and skill, but what I love most about him is his toughness. He is a real competitor. We are very excited to sign the best player in Ohio, in my opinion. Jarron already bleeds Red and Black and our fans will love him.”
He has moved up to the #2 player in the state of Ohio after a torrid summer on the AAU circuit. He's also moved from an ESPN 150 to a top 100 checking in at #65 in the country. A solid Senior season, and he'll end up in the top 50. This is a big time get for Cronin. He lands another scorer, and lands scoring wings in back-to-back recruiting seasons while continuing to fill in around those guys with rebounders and defensive guys.

When you look at next season, yes they lose Cobb and Ellis, but they have that transfer from NC State, who I think will be a Junior with 2 years left, and you will still have Caupain and Kevin Johnson, plus Evans as a Soph and Clark as a Junior with Cumberland coming off the bench, Justin Jennifer, and probably another Juco wing/PF.

Then you look even one more year, and you see that you'll have Jennifer as a Junior, Cumberland at the 2 as a Soph, Evans as a Junior, Clark as a Senior...

Cronin has done a fabulous job of setting this team to be successful long term. Now, this is a lot of projection into the future, but based on what we know as of right now, the future will remain bright. We haven't had this kind of an outlook since the mid-90's when Huggins was reeling in Fortson, Statterfield, Dermarr Johnson, Levitt (who by the way is the head coach at Colerain for BBall), Tate, etc...

I live in Colerain. I'll have to go see a few games now.

Yeah, my kid helps the football team as a team manager. He's talked to him a few times, and he's said that he's going to hook him up with some shirts and stuff for me. A few tickets to games. They have nowhere to go but up. I think they lost every single game last season. I was told by one of the football coaches that the former BBall coach wouldn't allow any of the football players to play because they miss too much of the pre-and regular season due to playoffs. You can't win if that is the case, because all the athletes that go to Colerain are playing football first. Period. They are a nationally ranked/recognized program.

Hence why that coach is no longer a coach. What a dumbass.

Yeah, no kidding. One of the coaches that helped my youngest son's baseball team is the Freshman coach, and he was telling me all about it this past summer. I couldn't believe it.

If you've ever seen a Colerain game this year, or last, you might see a small kid running up and down the sideline as part of the team. That's my oldest Step-son. He's been featured on a few things for TWC sports and WCPO with Ken Broo. Because of his medical conditions he can't play (and he stands at only 4'5" despite being nearly 17).

His freshman year he just walked right into Bolden's office and told him he was going to be a team manager. Bolden's response was that he thought an elementary kid had gotten lost in the school...LOL, but Bolden's an awesome guy and treats him like family.

They have a shot of winning State this year, and again next year. They return 9 seniors just on defense alone next year. This defense has only given up 17 points all year in the 1st half. Going to be some strong football next year.

I can never get my lazy ass to get up off the couch on a Friday night to go see a game. Plus, annoying teenagers.

Yeah, my wife wants to go to every home game. I'm like "Have fun". I go once or twice depending but I have very little desire to attend H.S. games.

Thankfully, some of their games have been on cable this year, so I've seen a few on TV. Their playoff game this weekend against St.X will be on cable.

It's like 1312 or something. Time Warner Sports. Not sure you'll get it on DISH, but I would check the higher up channels that usually include the odd local programming.

UC opens tonight.

Couple of cupcake games before having a decent stretch with Nebraska in a tournament that could also yield Tennessee, and then VCU, Butler, Iowa State, and then XU of course.

My brother in law is the head coach of the freshman team (football). Varsity is loaded. I've only been to one game this year, they destroyed Middletown in a game their starters were done at halftime.

But back on topic, why the fuck is Shaq Thomas wearing 24 this year?

Several people have asked, but he won't answer until after the season.

I can't wait til that clown is off the team.
LOL

At least he's playing better this year, but that's a pretty low bar he set considering the last 3 years.

Still outside the top 25...Not that I'm shocked. People who vote on these things are stupid.

Justin Jenifer is fucking good. Did you see the sequence in the second half where he turned it over, then got a steal, then went coast to coast and took it to the rack in a 1 on 3 and still scored?

There have been a lot of people that scout who compared him to Tyler Ulis at UK. That's some serious praise.

He's clearly the best passing PG recruit to step on UC's campus in, what...20 years, 30 years? They've all be scoring type PG's or 2-guards moved to PG.

The biggest thing the past 2 years has been the Freshman and their contributions. Never has Cronin had as much contribution from Freshmen. Clark last year started every game. Unheard of for Cronin. Evans and Jennifer immediately are guys who will help lower minutes for the starters, and they can produce while on the floor.

The trend looks to continue next year with Cumberland...The past 4+ years have been Mick's best recruiting efforts at UC.

A rare November true road game for UC.

Though, just up the road at Bowling Green. Almost went to the game since I went to college there, but alas, too much going on here. They built a new arena about 4-5 years ago and it's great. Small, of course, but seats go right down to the floor. Went to a game there a few years ago and I could have just walked right onto the floor. Great sight-lines.

The game, though, shouldn't be close. Another blowout on tap.
