Well Cali hope your optimism proves me wrong. I would be jumping for joy down here in Big D.

You gotta be enjoying the media down there in Big D right now tho...right? ;)

Hilarious to me that Dallas always accuses Skins fans about being delusional.

So again - why are they paying Barry? If indeed Shanahan figured out a way to exploit the Skins defense than why couldn't Barry counteract that? That was a month ago. A good coach can make adjustments within the game & certainly should be able to do it in a month! A good coach would simplify things & devise a defense that takes advantage of the players' strengths.

IMO Barry is certainly on the hot seat. I don't want to hear this crap about keeping him around strictly for continuity. Don't make the same mistake as with Haslett. If the guy is no good then he deserves to be canned whether he has been with the team 1 year or 5 years. He & his defense have 8 games to redeem themselves. I don't want to see any more of these interviews where Redskins players admit that they were no good & need to play better - just freaking do it already.
Yeah, that's an accurate assessment of Barry these past few weeks in terms of scheme IMO. In his defense, he doesn't miss tackles or miss gap assignments.

Ick and ugh

Over the past four games, the Redskins have given up 748 yards on the ground. That’s an average of 187 per game. For reference, the Cleveland Browns currently rank last in the NFL in run defense over the course of the season, and they average 147.6 yards allowed per game.

The tackling problems have been well documented. Washington defenders have struggled to wrap up and complete tackles, instead allowing runners to pick up extra yards. But tackling isn’t the only problem for this defense. One of the biggest problems schematically has been setting an edge. The edge defenders, Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy, have been crashing inside on run plays, leaving the edge vacant for the inside linebackers to have to cover.

But the Redskins also need to get more from their inside linebackers. Riley began the season exceptionally well before getting hurt, but has been poor since returning to the field. Compton performed well in his absence initially, but isn’t an impact player in the run game. Robinson has been the most worrying of the group. He was expected to take the next step forward this season in a contract year. While he’s flashed his athleticism and ability, like on his interception, he has failed to play consistently against the run.

I understand this and agree to a certain extent. However - why would you constantly put your players in position to fail? From all that is being reported it sounds like they had a system that worked at the beginning of the season but has failed since other coaches have figured it out to a degree. Wouldn't any normal coach counter with adjustments to make it tougher for the other team? How about perhaps just simplifying the system & stop trying to rely too much on gimmicks?

Why is that first picture of Murphy setting the edge and the RB cutting inside him. If he is going to make a point he might want to use pictures supporting his theory.

Yeah, you're right about that. He does follow with the point that this example didn't hurt them in this example. Think the primary point he is trying to show is that this scheme leaves our ILB corps and OLBs in a position that is unfavorable. And other teams have noticed this tendency and are capitalizing on it.

You got it. BTW - can someone please tell me what in the hell Murphy has been doing in the last month? I almost forgot that he was on the team.
Murphy has been a disappointment, but he is not alone. Where was hatcher yesterday? At one point, I thought he wasn't playing since I never saw him make a play. But then I saw him lining up. And Kerrigan has somewhat disappeared. He made a few plays, but no where near enough considering he is one of our playmakers on defense.

I haven't seen the full DJax interview. But Lake is a level headed reporter. Going to find it and post it if I can. Tone and context are obviously lost in tweet soundbites.

K, I'm changing my mind on Djax's comments. With context, I get it

Excerpt

While Jackson didn’t hang around to speak with many reporters in the locker room after the game, NBC 4’s Jason Pugh managed to talk to him. Jackson calmly answered Pugh’s questions, but his frustration after the loss was apparent.

“It felt good,” Jackson said when asked how it felt to be back on the field. “Unfortunately, [we lost]. We played a great team, had a lot of mistakes out there. It was good to get back in the flow of things and getting back my timing and speed, things like that, so, you know, it felt good.”
Pugh then mentioned the drops that plagued the Redskins’ receivers on Sunday and asked Jackson if he could explain them.

“I’m not the one making the drops, I can’t really speak for that,” Jackson said. “As professional athletes, we get paid a lot of money to go out there and perfect the job. That’s what we need to do. So, if we need to correct something in practice and do something better, that’s what we need to do as professionals.”

Finally, Pugh asked Jackson if he thinks that there’s enough time left in the season for him to contribute.

“With the opportunities I get, I think I’ll be able to do a good job with that,” Jackson said. “I can’t call the plays for me, I can’t throw the ball to myself, so when the coaches and the quarterback call my number, I’ll be there and doing what I need to do.”

I think that is the overall point. The entire D is not getting the job done. You can point to any one player you want to but there are breakdowns throughout. It isn't just because LBers are crashing down, or filling the same gap etc. etc. Football is the ultimate team sport and the entire D is not playing well. When you give 150+ on the ground 5 games in a row it isn't Kerrigan, it isn't Robinson .... it's the whole damned team. And maybe it is coaching too. Remember Barry didn't come here with stellar credentials.

So I will use my catch all phrase and say that is why we hired McCloughan. He needs to figure this stuff out and add players, keep the right coaches and get rid of the one's that aren't getting the job done. It isn't going to happen in one season. We all know that.

True that it's hard to highlight any one or two players on D as the primary reason for run defense being so poor.

Multiple issues going on and en point with its a team issue in the ultimate evaluation.

Cali,

Thanks for posting that entire Jackson interview. Definitely sounds like the media took one part of it & showed it out of context. When you read it in its entirety it doesn't sound bad at all.
