Looking at a 357

Looking to buy a 357. Just love the gun and I want a revolver. Like most things in this current world we live in, the older ones were better. By older I mean pre-1995. I was told this by a trusted gunsmith. Parts are better, not cheap or plastic parts.

I found a 357 19-5 but I really was looking for stainless or nickel. Just curious as to what some of you think about 357s.

I don't shoot revolvers well but something about them call to me. Especially the older ones. I prefer the blued over the nickle myself. Especially in older samples where it was actual bluing. If I were going to buy a new production revolver the only one I would consider would be the Ruger GP100. The Smith and Wesson revolvers aren't as nice as they used to be and the price tag is laughable on them. The Ruger is a tank.

I was told pre '95 smith and Wessons were the best. Better parts, quality, etc from a highly respected gunsmith in ft. Worth.

I'm waiting for the one. That black and the wood isn't for me. Kinda want a 3.5" barrel too.

The Ruger GP100 match champion is one of the better ones on the market today around $800 or less, 4" bbl and SS. The Performance Center S&W IMO are the only Smith's worth buying today for new S&W's I also really like the older 27 Smith's. Colt snake guns to me they are out of sight and really over price right now when a Colt Python at 90% brings $2500 to $2700 when there are a lot of them produce to me is just out right dumb. But right now people are chasing revolvers like mad both Colts and S&W so the price of older guns are inflated.

One of my biggest regrets is selling my weapons. Had a S & W .357 revolver, stainless 6", police issue. Had S. A. PD engraved in the trigger guard. Other regret was selling my Savage .300 Model 99 rifle. I still find myself looking for another .357 w/ long barrel. Mostly finding snub-noses.

The Model 19-5 that is pictured above was a policeman's gun and came from a "large collection" - according to the gun shop. I've been doing research and talked to my gunsmith and he said from an investment perspective, the Model 27 is better (heavier and a better frame).. So now I am looking at the earlier model 27's too.

But I also read that the Model 19 was one of the most accurate revolvers ever. I may go grab this and see if they'll take less than $500. Let my fiancé shoot it with .38s for a bit and see how it is. Then wait for a sweet model 27 later. Apparently, 357s don't get any better than the Model 27 (earlier models). 357 Model 27 with a 3.5" barrel was supposedly the best revolver of all time.

Love the .357. This is my next purchase for a carry weapon.

I have this gun. It was a pain in the ass to find so I would suggest buying it if you see it.

I put the Hogue grips on it and it's great. The GP100 is a little too big for my grip so I like the SP101.

Ok the historian dude from Smith & Wesson just told me the 19's are becoming collectors items. Anything pre-57 will be well over $1000.

He said this one was from 1983. K frame 357 and that these were lighter than the heavier Model 27's, so to use .38s when target shooting and save the .357s for the real deal.

Also said that these when shot a lot were not what you want, so to check the end of the barrel and look if it's eroded, along with look at the recoil shield behind the cylinder to see if the blue is worn down and there are circles.

He said $500 is in the ball park.

1. Ruger LCR

I’m going to begin with my favorite: the Ruger LCR. This little gun will handle both .38s and .357s. Both kick. But the .357 will leave your wrist sore. I put 50 .357s through an LCR I have in for review this mast weekend and I was legitimately hurting after. Three days out, I still have a dull ache in my wrist.

But the trigger on this is one of the lightest, easiest to aim DAO triggers I’ve ever seen. It is almost as easy to shoot as a traditional revolver.
The LCR is light at 17.10 ounces. The MSRP on the LCR is $599.
What I think makes this the best choice is the LCR .22LR. If I were going to carry an LCR in .357, I’d do all of my holster training and target work with the .22 version. It would save wear on the gun and money

This is my concealed carry weapon bought a few months ago. Great gun you can carry in a paddle holster and it isn't obvious. Plus the fact you can .38 rounds through it at the range is great. More and more off-duty cops are carry revolvers. If you can't do it in 5 shots with a .357 your in trouble.

My fav is my S&W 686+ deadly accurate. The Ruger GP100 is not a bad gun either and I have shot it a bunch but if you want the best go S&W.

Not sure if you're still looking or not, but you can check out the Ruger Security Six from back in the day. I own one and it is a solid shooter.

This my off duty carry. In summer I like the Beretta Tomcat. A .32 caliber breach barrel loaded with hollow points. Fits in cargo pockets nicely. Has the effect of a .380.
