RW on Martin:

“Maybe he’s a late bloomer,” Washington said. “Why not? He’s got tremendous potential. He’s getting better, just not in the increments as huge as we would like. But he is getting better. A lot of times, it takes five full years before a player fully reaches the level of what they will be.”

This is just year 2.

I think the Phillies are a year too late in getting the return they would have liked for Cliff Lee. Lee is wearing down and costs way too much in salary and in what the Phillies will want in return. That is one team that does not know when to hold them and when to fold them.

I read Taveras and Shelby Miller could get it done. Not sure if that was offered, but that would do it if I ran the RS. I hope they don't get those 2. They immediately get better and I believe Lester will sign back with the Sox in FA.

1. I would HOPE that would get it done for Lester. Given the fact that Taveras is/was a top prospect in the game & Miller is a quality SP.

2. STL would be stupid to offer that. Hell, even to offer either of them straight up would be stupid.

The Rangers are willing to eat some of the remaining salary on Alex Rios‘ deal, but talks could still go down to the wire, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Rosenthal hears that interest from several Rios suitors — including the Indians, Giants, Reds and Royals — has waned of late.

At least four teams were said to be in on Rios over the weekend, but there’s been little chatter regarding the right fielder since that time. The 33-year-old is batting a strong .305/.334/.430 this season, but his power has declined in 2014. Rios has just four homers on the season after belting 18 last year and 25 in 2012. He’s owed roughly $4.23MM of his $12.5MM salary for the remainder of the 2014 season, plus a $1MM buyout on a $13.5MM option for the 2015 campaign.

It would not be at all "stupid" IMO to offer either one, if this was the piece which took them to the WS. When you get a real chance to win it all, most GM's go a little further out on the limb, that's for sure.

Of course, you never know if it was a good or bad deal until Oct.

You are 100% correct on this one. Even if he's completely healthy, where would he stack up in a decent rotation; # 3 starter? And he's owed sooooo much money. Signed only through 2015, with vested option in 2016. But again, the $$ and his age, 35 and soon to be 36, nothing is going in the right direction for him or them.

And you've got a good take on how the Phillies, as an organization, approach trades; too late.

I've seen the commercial he "tries" to sing it in. Lord, it's awful.

#Indians sending Justin Masterson to #STLCards, per @pgammo.

Probably not in on Lester anymore, I would think

That was at the end of the article. Earlier this was stated:

“Marty’s just got to make adjustments,” manager Ron Washington said. “It takes a lot of thought process to learn at the major league level. But this is a game of adjustments, and he’s got to make them. He’s got to start using the whole field. He’s got to do something different.”

And too many issues in the gaps between OFers and the recurring theme is Martin is in CF.

Side Note- It was Harry for Harrison and now Marty? Come on Ronny.

I really thought the key behind the entire article was the statement about a 5 year window, and this being his second one in the bigs.

But, there is definitely something wrong with his calling of balls in the gaps. It's been a probably all year long, and it seems to be be horrible between him and Rios. And that part of the game should already be mastered, and screw a bunch of 5 year windows IMO.

This doesn't fall in line with what you've been preaching. If the Astros were going to lose then you would want us to lose, correct?

Now, since you were wrong and the Astros won, it wouldn't be the end of the world if we won today. I figured you had a grasp on how this whole tanking thing works.....

This article, partially anyway, from Calvin Watkins on ESPN:

Jeter has morphed into a beloved figure during his 19-year career with the New York Yankees, and there is one man who will take special notice of the pregame ceremony at Globe Life Park and how he handles himself: Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.

If Jeter is the symbol for what a baseball shortstop is supposed to look like, then Andrus wants to be that.

"I think he's a perfect role model for any player, the way he handles himself on the field, especially the way he handles himself away from the field," Andrus said. "He's never been in trouble, he knows how to handle media, especially playing in New York. I can only image how much pressure he has every single day. He's a guy as soon as he steps on the field you can see how professional he is and the thing is everybody on the field respects him, and that's something really hard to earn."

From an intimate space, Andrus learned more about the game playing beside the now-retired Michael Young and Omar Vizquel. Each told him about leadership in a clubhouse and becoming a positive influence on the field.

You see Andrus' attempts at this every night. Any pop fly that hangs over the shallow portions of left field turn into a sprint between Andrus and the left fielder.

But Andrus is trying to make this his team, and particularly turn into the captain of the infield and one day perhaps be the leader of his team like Jeter in New York.

I'm somewhat conflicted by this article. But there's more to it on ESPN under the "Must See" section.
