The "blue line" moves with the last defender. So if you are past the last defender, you are offside.

Along with a "moving blue line", the other difference between hockey and soccer offsides is that in soccer, you only have to be onside when your teammate plays the ball - you don't have to wait for the ball itself.

There are other, rare exceptions, but those are the two main difference. If you understand hockey offside, soccer offside shouldn't be too difficult to understand after watching a few games. Especially when they always show that freeze frame shot.

And what's to stop a defender from just stopping when beaten to "throw" the other guy offside?

I watched the Brazil / Nederlandish game and the Germany / Argentina game and thought I was starting to follow it.

That's called the offside trap, and it happens often. The downside is that if you fail at the trap, the opposing player is usually 1v1 with the goaltender shooting at a 24 foot wide goal. No one but Argentina screws up chances like that.

In terms of the headed ball off the post, a goal can be scored if the offside player is deemed to have had no part in or tries to have had a part in the play. So Mueller (I think it was him), though offside, didn't affect the play until the deflection hit him. I'm not a fan of this rule, especially in a corner kick situation when he runs from behind the goaltender. To me, that's having a part in the play since the defense has to account for him.

I hope that doesn't confuse the issue more...

I thought I had a sufficient understanding of the offside rule until I heard that explanation by the announcer.

The German's hitting the post was a sort of odd situation, so here goes:
1) It's impossible for a player to be offside on a corner kick. This is because, if your own teammate has the ball ahead of you and plays it back to you, you didn't precede the ball past the last defender. And since a corner kick is played from the end line, you can't be beyond it unless you're out of the field of play.

2) Because of 1, the first German to make contact with the ball - the header - was fine.

3) The ball then hits the post and rebounds to a German player (Muller) who is standing between the last defender and the goalkeeper. Even though the ball deflected off the post instead of being passed directly to him, the same rule applies and he's considered offside.

Because of all of that, had the header gone in directly, there would be no offside because it's the immediate corner kick play. But because of the deflection off the post going back to him, he cannot score on the rebound.

He was OK by me.

I always say a guy can be offside as long as he's not in "the play". But as soon as he's in the play.....

finalists in euro 2012 and runners up at last years uefa u21. Theyll be ok with Verratti, Immobile and Insigne going forward ... you talk as if we're england living off a win from almost 50 years ago

I was shaking my head at that move as well, Lavezzi had a great first half, he was creating all kinds of grief for the German defenders...
