There is just no good reason to do it.

I think it would give a good team that may have had a few setbacks during the season but come on strong at the end a chance to make some noise or even win it all.
And it would extend the playoffs a little longer so fans can enjoy some football.
But I don't think any team should get a second bye week just because they had the best record.
It's an unfair advantage, even though it doesn't always guarantee a win.
Make the playing field even for everyone that made it in, is the fair way to do it.

If you do not make the playoffs currently, you don't deserve to. An expanded playoffs is 100% unacceptable.

I think the reasoning behind it is that when a couple teams have 10 or 11 wins and don't get in because they are in tough divisions and yet some other teams get in with 8 wins because they are in a weak division, it makes for one sided mismatches and is a bit unfair to the better teams that didn't get in with a better record....
Maybe they should just make it that you have to win 10 games to get in and if they don't then their division will not be represented in the playoffs and the other teams that did would take their spot.
Just thinking out loud, what do you think ?

Win your division.

It's that simple.

Here's the problem with that: Not all divisions are in terms of quality. Lets say for example, the Patriots go 16-0, and my Bills go 14-2. Why should my Bills get disqualified at 14-2, when won 14 teams and produced a better resume than the other division winners? I know it's an extreme example, but I think you get the picture.

The other problem is: what happens to the teams which lost their division, but produced at least 8 wins on the season? Do we create a bowl system for them?

No. The NFL playoff system is perfect. There is not, never has been, and never will be a better playoff system than right now in the NFL.

Leave perfection alone. Anything you do is 100% guaranteed to make it worse.

Too fucking bad.

If you didn't win your division, you don't have a case you're the best. If you did, you do. Wild cards are a gift. If you don't win your division, you should be grateful for them. If you both didn't win your division and didn't make either of the two wild card spots, you aren't good enough. Period. I don't care if you were 15-0-1 and got beat out by 0-15-1 team that won their division. You deserve nothing. Win your division.

That is exactly the point. The divisions are not equal, and teams would get punished for simply being in a tougher division, and it's not something they had control of ahead of time.

Why are we fretting adding two more teams? I think it would make these more exciting, and would add revenue to the system.

I'm surprised that a Pats fan would see it that way when they have been a victim of this very system some years back when Cassel took them to 11 wins and they missed the playoffs while some 9-7 teams got in.....
I think it's far from perfect and obviously so does the league and owners.
It's gonna be expanded, maybe not this yr, but very soon, IMO.

They weren't good enough. The system is perfect and Goodell is a piece of shit if he touches it.

11 Wins and didn't even get a WC spot.....That's plenty good enough to be in the playoffs.
They had as good a chance as any to win it all that yr and had proven it with their win loss record.
I can't believe I am defending the Pats to a Pats fan...lol

I disagree, they were eliminated by the system and I have heard professionals discussing that very incident and all that I have gathered agree that it was and is a flaw in the system that can and does sometimes happen....

They played an extremely weak schedule that year. They deserved exactly what they got.

Don't screw around with basic math. The formula is good because everything is comfortably divisible by four. 14 is not.

I am definitely against this. NFL playoffs are fine just the way they are. There will be too many non-deserving teams getting in every year.

No, I think everything is perfect the way it is.

You're not really going to have more teams fighting for more spots because, there is only one spot everyone will be fighting for, the last one. The teams above that will more than likely already be locked in, just the way it currently happens, and it will only allow some lower caliber teams to make it in.

People already complain when 9-7 teams advance, image if there were 3 or 4 of those types of teams.

No...I don't need more football...the current format works well imo. The only part I really like is only the #1 seed gets the week off...makes that carrot more valuable.

I will say...if I had to chose 18 gm season or 14 playoff teams, I would go with 14 playoff teams.

It only affects 2 seeds, the #2 seed and the #7 seed... and only affect the #2 seed negatively...

So i don't think it is as bad as you people want to claim it is... With that said i don't like it either... But i don't think it is THAT bad of a move...
