Impact of NFL on American Heavyweights? Read theory.

There is this theory going around in boxing circles that the recent for boxing's decline is because of the NFL/NBA. If you look at this list..


a LOT of these Heavyweights on that list falls within the NFL weight bracket and size bracket. Could there be a direct link?

Of course there is. I can't think of a worse way to make a living then by getting punched in the face. There's not much money in it either. You got a few who make all the money and have no problem dodging guys that actually have a chance of beating them.

The reason it is in decline is MMA and their rise, no marque names with great rivalries for people to latch onto, and a lot of people turning away with the corruption of the sport. I don't see the NFL having any impact on it.

Exactly. Corruption and MMA are far bigger issues for boxing than the NFL will ever be.

Definitely MMA. I'd rather watch two guys beat the mortal shit out of each other for real than watch two guys throw the occasional jab then stop to hug each other for 5 minutes while the ref tries to break them up.

Don King killed boxing, not the NFL...

He let Tyson run his life into the ground then there was no else coming after Mike, he took millions from these guys and made pay per view a monster it is now......

He let Tyson run his life into the ground then there was no else coming after Mike, he took millions from these guys and made pay per view a monster it is now......

King convinced Tyson to cut ties with Cus D'Amoto's people and Tyson went downhill quick. The Tyson/Spinks fight was the biggest joke of all. I would have taken several million dollars to go in the ring 15 seconds with Tyson and then take a quick dive.

For too long boxing promoters scammed the public with confusing championship belts, outright fixed outcomes, shady decision outcomes, and more corruption...eventually it became too transparent to the casual boxing fan and they said enough. That opened the door for MMA, etc. to gain in popularity.

I do think athletes in general have steered away from boxing, but I wouldn't say the NFL or NBA specificially has had any bearing on the sport.

IMO...promoters killed boxing as we once knew it.

Three to four on Sunday afternoon, one on Sunday night, one on Monday, one on Thursday, all the playoffs and the championship game are broadcast to everyone. There's no comparison.

Don King was a bad element is a sport full of bad elements, but he screwed fighters more than he did the fight fans...Tyson was always a self destructive type person and once his mentor passed he became Mike Tyson again...I wouldn't lay that one on King.

King did convince Tyson to dump Teddy Atlas and D'Amato's group which were training Tyson and used the race card to do it. King just wanted to milk Tyson for all he was worth and then disposed of him.

No doubt, but my point here is wasn't D'Amato like a father figure to Tyson? I think he's the one that got him off the streets and into boxing...Mike really trusted him...once he passed Tyson started to go off the deep end...King came into the picture, pried him away as you mentioned and finished him off.
