You do all realize that the exorcize of who should we get in the draft is basically a fruitless endeavor at least until free agency is mid way through. I would be willing to bet our needs now and our needs in late April will be markedly different. If the draft were today, heck yes we trade up and fill ILB or CB or RT no questions asked. But Im betting we fill at least two of these three spots within the first week of FA.

Its why aside from a few guys who are either late 1st rounders, or 2nd-3rd who I think have a shot to improve, IM not really throwing too many names on the board as of yet. I want to see what spots we fill before the draft before I really start hammering down on the draft stuff.

IM on record as saying Talib is a very very bad idea. He is in it for the money ( I know they all are) but with his injury and off field issues, paying him 7-8 million a year would be a huge mistake. I would rather they bring back Hall at half that and draft a CB.

Talib was injured in the playoff game, what's the status of that injury?

I agree that we will not peruse Talib. It's one thing to go after a player with a troubled past that you can get cheap, ots another thing to pay a guy top dollar and have the risk that he gets in trouble again. If we co CB via FA, I'd like to see someone like sam shields. Solid player, and won't break the bank.

I already posted a link to jy19 to prove it. I know Shields is younger but he is not the player Talib is and he will command big money b/c of his age. 7-8 million is not top dollar for a CB. Revis gets 16. We desperately need a #1 CB and Talib is it.

Thats all he is looking for is the payday, and I think he is a mistake. Hell Revis is severly over paid. Dean, its all about cost/production vs risk

While Talib MIGHT give better production, it will be at twice the cost and a higher over all risk. Hall might be a small step down in production, but at a much lower cost and risk factor. If they cost the same, I would be all for Talib, but he will cost likely twice as much as Hall, and has a higher likelyhood of missing games due to injury or off field issues.

Its not possible for the draft to dictate FA since the draft happens after FA starts. If the draft where before FA, then that would be logical. Fill holes left in FA after the draft. But if you wait until after the draft to start signing FA's you end up with guys starting who shouldnt even be backups.

It is ass backwards. Ideally, you use FA to fill holes and augment your team that has been built through your draft. You draft the best players available and then use FA to plug the holes you couldn't address in the draft. but since FA occurs first, this is hard to do.

The Players association would never go for the draft taking place before FA starts. It would lower the FA value across the board. If the draft happened first, teams would change their whole line of thinking because they would fill holes in the draft and leave older FA's even further out of the loop. If the NFL tried to move the draft up and push FA back, the NFLPA would strike.

GK, in a perfect world your idea would work. But since FA start before the draft and teams are not going to simply wait and build off the draft and fill with FA, you dont get to live in a vaccum. What happens if you need a starting ILB and you cant draft one worthy of starting? You end up stuck with a backup starting and likely some one who isnt very good because all the good FA will get signed while you are waiting for the draft. If you try and build straight through the draft and you cant get quality starters, you basically pissed away another year.

And most of your after the draft bargains are really just stopgap fillers. You cant build a team like that because you can never have a level of consistency.

We have neither the first round draft pick, or the owner and fan base to sit through another two or three years of being bad while we try and avoid bringing in big name free agents. YYes...We can be Spenders, not just on Old Players......Shany did do a decent job of bringing in younger guys when he was here the forst couple years
