You're one smart ass Rob Base and I assume you know everything?

People really think Suh is the only player that commands a lot of attention? That's laughable. Its also laughable to trade a QB away instead of a DT. Now, all of a sudden, Suh makes up the whole Lions team? Please.

I'm too old to know everything. I leave that to you young guys.

All he said is that it would fix the cap problem.

If that is the case -- trade Calvin Johnson, Suh and Stafford and the Lions will have more money than they know what to do with. :)

I'm just curious how much other fans on here think the Lions should give Suh. As I said -- I'm all for making him the highest paid DT and the exact same contract he had would do that again. I just think, after signing with Jay-Z, he is going to be asking for an astronomical amount of money, especially because of the poor decisions the front office made handling his rookie contract and pushing back the cap hit each year.

If they push it back again by giving him an extension -- Detroit could be looking at a cap hit in the ballpark of 15-20 million over the length of his next deal per year. That is absurd for a DT.

And Dr. Evil -- please correct me if I'm wrong in my thinking, as I said, I'm not a cap expert and you seem to be the go to guy on these boards for these type of questions.

I did Smitty, but when he started CB playing shitty, I took my assessment back in stating that he was playing at an elite level during the first eight games or so. You win. He's not elite.

There are no winners in this Yao, we're all Lions fans. (Id like to have similar signed documents from various others here on the board. For my notes.)

Roughly ten percent on his old deal. You can give him six years, hell.... seven, that's fine. If we were to franchise his AllPro butt he'd get a 20% raise, so Im fine with 10%. If its 12%, Im still fine. If its 18% and eight years Mayhew will have went too far, IMO.

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh has hired Jay-Z and Roc Nation as his new representation.
Suh fired agent Roosevelt Barnes last month and was fully expected to hire Jay-Z. The Lions and Suh can now get to hammering out a long-term extension in an effort to reduce his $22.4 million 2014 cap hit. Suh earned $51.8 million in his first four seasons and may become the highest-paid defensive player.

Good. Suh is the real face of this team.

Going back to the initial post of the thread, I'm a bit leery of Suh's intentions. Players don't typically fire their agent if they are content with simply re-signing with their current club. I get that Jay-Z offers some lifestyle stuff that Suh is probably attracted to, but still. A bit concerning.

I think that the hiring of Jay z Could have little to do with what he wants out of his contract. Such seems like a guy that is trying to build a brand and needs help with his public image. Jay Z can help in both areas.

Yes, cap hits will be in the $15m range. They could structure it where in the third year when the current dead money falls off it could be a fair amount lower. But that will have to be offset with a much higher number in another year. Try to look at it this way, if the Lions give him a 5yr/$60m contract they will have to accept cap hits over those 5 years that account for $79.5m. Thats the value of the new contract AND the $19.5m in dead money that still has not yet been ammortized. That's the penalty for restructuring and pushing back. By the way, try to imagine what the cost will be in another few years when the Lions push even more $ back. I have continually said that there are consequences to that strategy. There WILL be a day of reckoning when that finally comes due. You can fix it now and still improve the team or you can completely throw away a year in the future. Just look at the purge done by the 2013 Raiders.

I would offer him the 5yr/$60m deal I mentioned above as my absolute max. Not one nickel higher. That's a $12m/yr average deal when the next highest one in the league is $10.665m/yr, and thats the Atkins deal. The idea of making him the highest paid defensive player in the league is absolutely laughable. I'd trade him in a heartbeat if thats the amount he is looking for.

The Raiders have $70m in cap space and he'd look good in one of their uniforms if it came to that. They arent going to be any good this year so if I have to take a deal that is their 2nd and 3rd this year and their second next (with conditions that could make it a first) I pull that trigger without hesitation.

I don't expect the Lions to trade Suh, and I dont really want them to, instead I expect them to piss me off even more and increase my hatred of this front office by dramatically overpaying and just make the cap situation even worse. They have zero leverage to negotiate wtih and even less vision of the future. They will both be fired and hand off a complete mess to someone else.

If you look at this from an emotional standpoint, pay Suh whatever it takes because that fulfills the emotion "I want him" reaction. As a business decision, if a dollar amount can't be negotiated that works for both the club and the player, then it becomes in everybody's best interest to trade him. As much as I like Suh, as much as he is a once in decade type player, the decision needs to be based on the business side to provide for the longterm health of the organization.

That said, I do hope the two sides get it together. This probably will be long and painful negotiation. No need to sweat the small stuff on a daily basis.

I dont want to pay him whatever he wants. I also dont want to trade a proven stud in his prime for draft picks.

I just believe whatever dr evil says about the cap, because he said his job is all about numbers and it makes my head hurt to try to think about all of it.

The problem here is what happens to our other good players a few years from now when the team has all its money in three guys? Let Fairley go? He'll be watching this. Ansah? We want him to be the best DE in football and if he gets close, he'll command his. And some people want to add Clowney. Lol.

What if Levy puts up another really good season? Tolluch? Will the team roll with a cheap RB later? We want Geenwood to be ome an instant starter but if he puts up great numbers, he'll be asking for a lot of money considering his situation. The team cant even keep Delmas. Houston's and Quin's salaries look like tons of money since the team is so strapped. We are now talking about getting Houston out of here because he is not playing to the level of his contract. That will continue moving forward. Everyone wants to replace Reiff with an amazing LT or get an amazing RT. How would the team afford that down the line?

To me, by signing Suh to a huge contract means that the team will attempt to win with three guys, while finding cheap players to fill other roles, while struggling to hang on to other good players. Not good. But if it works, hey, I'll take it.

Yeah the lions need to start nailing their later draft picks, thats how teams are able to manage financially.

Go ahead and bash Stafford all you want but it doesn't matter. I'd be more willing to pay a QB over a DT any day. What exactly has Suh done that Stafford hasn't? Pro Bowl? Has Suh broken any records? What are we comparing here?

Honestly it just makes too much sense financially to sign suh to along term deal. Throw on top of that hes going to be all pro the next ten years, how can you trade him? Im as pro stafford as they come but suh has already been a much better player at his position than stafford. I agree with you that staff is going to be a stud, I just dont get how you are all about paying one guy to stay here who hasnt excelled yet but want to trade the other whos dominating. Thats all.

Gvsu,

Dude, I never ever said ignore the defense. I said this: Draft Watkins in the first round because he might be the best player in thedraft and the Lions recieving unit sucks. OR, draft a CB if if one is rated high enough to go at 10. AND, I said i would like the team to draft offense first and the rest defense. That's what I said.

Sorry that I'm not on the Barr and Mack bandwagon like most of you. I do understand why you guys like them though. I'm not all happy-go-lucky about Suh either-to me, he disappears too often and is all overly reckless. This team can win without him, but they can't without Megatron.

Fair enough, I was just under the impression that you were only concerned about building the offense based on your stafford convos, the fact you want to spend our top pick on a #2 receiver and that you want to trade their best defensive player. I appreciate you clearing it up man.
