Sources tell NFL Network's Mike Silver that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan's benching of Robert Griffin III was a "football decision based on poor performance."
According to Silver, Shanny believed he "had to bench RGIII to maintain credibility with the team," but that he "didn't want to throw RGIII under the bus by stating poor performance as the reason." Just another day in paradise. RGIII was certainly playing poorly, but it was Shanahan himself who recently said the only way Griffin would get better was by getting as many reps as possible. Per Silver, Griffin was "extremely angry" to be shut down for health reasons. We'd guess he'll be even more angry now. The Redskins' 2013 season can't end soon enough.

Do you even know who Silver is? He is a tool. He's the one that "broke" the story that RG3 didn't want his bad plays shown on tape, which was proven false by multiple people, including Shanahan and Briles. Please don't use his as the final word on anything.

Dean while I agree he needed to be benched, I cant agree that its actually nice to see him benched. I wanted to see him succeed. I would have been accepting of a bad season from the team if he was actually showing improvement in spite of our 3-10 record at present. Its very not nice to see we needed to bench him. It hurts the team as a whole. Now this might serve to make him better in the long run, but it sucks that we got to this point.

Man I been a Skins fan for 40 years, then next time I see a Redskins coach finish out a contract will be the first time I see a Redskins coach finish out a contract.

First off Dean, benching RG3 doesn't do him or the team any good at this point since he is our franchise QB. Second, Shanahan lying about sitting him for health reasons has only cemented his one way ticket out of DC which I feel ultimately is what he wants and to get paid. Third, if your going to bench Griffin, you might as well bench Montgomery, Chester and Polumbus as well. On defense, you can bench everyone not named Coefield, Rak, Kerrigan, Riley & Hall. This has become such a circus and the fan base has to suffer. Trust me, Griffin is not the root of our problems. Both the Shanahan's were and I'm glad the will be gone in 3 weeks.

the hit would be 12 mil out of a projected 41 mil in cap space gained from penalties , and cutting players

that is 29 mil left . in 2015 most of the dead cap space will be gone and we would have money for that year as well

plus we still have KC and we would be getting draft picks to fill holes

You need to stop hanging out with Jerry Jones. A $12 million dollar cap hit for a late 1st and a second maybe?? You dont seriously think if we offered him up right now any one would give 2 high draft picks for a guy we obviously dont want in that situation do you?? I dont. The Browns got one likely mid to late 1st rounder for a RB they picked in the same draft.

Since no one heard the coaches show today let me tell you that Shanahan said Griffin is being sat down because of the amount of hits he has taken in the past few games. Doc Walker asked if he was being benched for performance and Shanahan once again said it had nothing to do with performance and that Robert was the teams franchise QB.

If you want to call Shanahan a liar that is fine but Silver's report is conjecture on his part.
