Browns GM: Hoyer better than Johnny Suckball

by substantial margain

The Cleveland Browns continued their public campaign to make Johnny Manziel feel like a rookie on Wednesday.

On the same afternoon that Manziel took snaps behind Brian Hoyer and Tyler Thigpen, general manager Ray Farmer indicated that Manziel has a lot of ground to make up in the team's quarterback competition.

"I want the best quarterback to start. Who is the best quarterback? Brian Hoyer," Farmer told WKRK-FM in Cleveland. Farmer was then asked about the gap between Manziel and Hoyer.

"That's a good question. I would tell you that (Hoyer is better than Manziel) probably by a substantial margin," Farmer said. "I would say that because here's a guy that's a five- or six-year veteran who has been in the league, that knows the defenses, that reads it quicker, that understands it. (Hoyer) has an advanced calculus degree. Johnny is good at math, but I don't know if he's in the advanced calculus stages.

"(Experience in the league) means a lot. It means more than people think."

Fair enough. Comments in May about a quarterback competition mean even less than that. We will write about Johnny Manziel's ups and downs all offseason to fill the vacuum of actual news, but let's recognize all of this May chatter for what it is.

Farmer, owner Jimmy Haslam and coach Mike Pettine have made a concerted effort to make Manziel realize he's not bigger than the team. The team's media strategy with Manziel supports that as well. It feels a little heavy-handed and pointless, but it's the way they are choosing to deliver their message.

Coach Mike Pettine echoed Farmer's sentiment Wednesday, calling Manziel's efforts on the field "inconsistent" thus far, like most rookies. Pettine expects Manziel to get more comfortable once he catches up with "mental part" of the game.

That's the key. Perhaps Farmer has a point that that Hoyer is ahead of Manziel by a "substantial margin" as OTAs open. If that's still true in late August, things have gone substantially wrong.

I thought Hoyer did an excellent job in his limited time playing last year. I feel they might have found something if he didn't get hurt. He deserves another shot and it sounds like he's going to get it.

Yeah, Hoyer look like he could be good. He needs to stay on the field however. Best not to give JF any chances to get on the field.

So does he bring three titles to Cleveland or breaks Brady's record???

Talk about buyers remorse coming out of Cleveland, Johnny Boy hasn't taken a game snap and there ready to kill this kid...

I think both 4SB's and more playoffs wins and best his winning pct going into .800's. Actually I meant Looks before Tom had the plugs done. Good thing Cleveland didnt take him with the 6th pick. Kid is real young and it will take him time. Good thing Hoyer sat and learned from Brady for 5 years, Manziel could do the same. Look how Rodgers turned out, sitting behind Favre

True but:

Name one back up to Tom Brady that did anything after leaving New England?

And no Drew Bledsoe doesn't count!

Of course Drew doesnt count because Tom was his backup. Most guys fells off the map. Prob like that for 90% of backups that go to another team. I thought Matt Flynn was gonna succeed in Seattle but Carroll knew better than me to put Wilson in. Cleveland needs to land a real starting QB and not have a different starter every year, no consistency there

plus Drew didnt exactly light it up in Buffalo or Dallas

Might not be the worst thing in the world for Manziel if he begins the season carrying a clip board. Someone posted the Browns first six games and it's a pretty tough start of the season for them.

I think that has to do with play on the field (undeniably great) as opposed to being a dbag and whiner.

He might seem like a dbag and whiner to you but not to fans that hear him on radio , around here. We take it him being competitive on field and passion for the game

Of course. I'm sure Red Sox fans loved Roger Clemons when he was in Boston. Newsflash...he was a dick before becoming a Yankee.

No it wouldn't be bad for Johnny to carry the clip board, I like that Thomas and other players are rallying behind Hoyer..
