Mets-another idiotic trade

Mets with worst/most illogical trade to the Pirates

They unload 2 guys who have excellent stats and RBI production and get virtually nothing in return. And it can't be a salary dump because neither player was highly paid.

Anybody make sense of this?

Letting Byrd go I do not understand. However, I am not all that up on their farm system, so I do not know if they are eyeing a young stud to come up and take over right from Byrd next year. Save for that, maybe they did not want to give him a raise from the $ 700,000 he is getting this year, as he goes into his age 36/37 season. However, with Buck, there IS a reason to move him.

Travis D'Arnaud. He will take over at C for them next year, and, hopefully for them, a good long time.

1.) What did you expect them to get? It's a late-August waiver trade. You rarely have much going the other way in a waiver trade.
2.) Excellent stats? What about Buck's stats are excellent? Please enlighten me. Byrd is indeed having a very good season, but what does keeping him accomplish? Their season is done. And it's not like he's an established star. He's just having a nice season. Might be a fluke.
3.) Neither player is part of the Mets' future, so they are expendable. It would be stupid to *not* trying and get *something* for players like them.
4.) Both players are free agents after the season, so they're even more expendable.
5.) Both players could potentially be signed in the offseason.
6.) A 19-year-old shortstop with pop isn't "virtually nothing". He's the 11th rated prospect in the Pirates' deep farm system. That's actually a pretty decent return at this stage in the season for two expendable players.

Does it make some sense now?

Wish they had done this prior to the deadline, probably could have gotten a little more. Mets probably won't be real contenders until 2015 and neither of these guys really factors into that situation. As stated we have our future catcher with the team now (Travis D'Arnaud who was the centerpiece of the RA Dickey return package).

Maybe Byrd asked to be moved? I still think the Mets plan on trading for a power bat in right in the offseason or sometime next season and going all in on either Ellsbury or Choo in free agency so it's not too terrible. I would've liked to have Byrd back next year as a utility guy/clubhouse guy but neither guy was the answer here so I don't mind.

Byrd isn't some entrenched veteran. He's a free agent. If you can get something for him now, you do it. There's nothing to gain by keeping him, and you could always bring him back. But most likely, this is a fluke season and he'll go right back to being typical Marlon Byrd next year.

Do the Mets have $$ to spend again? Due to the Wilpons getting caught up in the Madoff Mess, I know they have had to opperate on the cheap for the last few years is all.

Wilpons apparently are back on track financially and the team has about $60 million in straight up dead money coming off the books (Santana, Bay, Frank Francisco). They had a payroll of I believe $80 million this year and have stated they plan on bumping that up to about $100 million next year. So doing some arithmetic 80 - 60 = 20. 100 - 20 = the Mets plan on spending a lot.

well byrd is a FA and would want a raise and I wouldnt trust him doing the same next year and we are looking to move forward to D'Arnaud so I think what was really dumb was not trading them in July when you could have probably gotten more. for them.

Yeah, supposedly they have some bucks to play with for next season. I just got home, didn't hear about the trade except for something about tonight being Marlon Byrd t-shirt night. I'm assuming we got some prospects?

Yes. Not only is the Madoff issue no longer really affecting Mets' operations, but they only have about $40M committed to players for next year. They have at least $50M to spend this offseason (but a lot of positions to fill), and could probably bump that up to $80M if they were so inclined. Within the next 3 years, they should be ready to spend upwards of $150M again, unless the Wilpons prefer to line their pockets and continue to use Madoff as a scapegoat when they're perfectly capable of spending big.

2014 is going to be a progress year. Sign a few quality guys and/or try to make a few good trades. Let the young guys mature for another year. Then, once Harvey is back, hopefully you have some nice complimentary pieces and can go out and make a big signing for 2015.

The very early word was 1 prospect, and then maybe another, or $$. The who was posted elsewhere, but I do not rememeber where.

Who says they didn't try in July? Maybe they were just asking for too much or the right offer didn't come across the wire.

The Mets, who announced the deal in a press release, received infield prospect Dilson Herrera and a player to be named.

Herrera, 19, is batting .265 with 11 homers at Class A West Virginia this season. The second baseman appeared in this year's All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field.

A 19-year-old shortstop/2B with pop and a PTBNL.

Lol, whatever. Buck and Byrd weren't in plans for the future anyway. I just think it's funny how Alderson made a big deal about how the Mets would have to be "overwhelmed" to consider moving Byrd. Ah well, that's my Metsies!

That's just a ploy to try and get some GM to overpay. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn't. Sometimes, you get a dipshit like Jim Duquette to give up a great prospect for a useless turd like Victor Zambrano.

Yuck, thank god Scott Kazmir never really amounted to much. What a horrendous deal.
