Seems like there's been a lot of injuries in camps lately. At least more than usual or maybe its just happened to more notable players so we're more aware of it. But today I was listening to SVP & Russillo when I heard an intriguing theory as to why. Danny Kannell was filling in as host and he believes the injuries are occurring because of the new CBA which eliminated two-a-days. His reasoning is the two-a-days, while it was a lot of work for the player, got you into game shape quicker and made your body ready for football like cuts. With them gone, players are possibly coming into camp out of shape or just not use to cutting again and they're getting hurt. That sort of makes a lot of sense. Thoughts?

Are there any stats out that actually confirm that there's been more injuries than on average? Like I said over in the Seattle forum, injuries to guys with intriguing storylines like Harvin or Culliver or more high impact, in terms of how the problem is perceived.

I agree. Less pads in practice. These guys are not ready for the hits when it starts. I think the injury's are worse now than before. I have no proof, but it seems like it.

There has been a lot more serious injuries within the first couple weeks this year then I have seen the past few years. Obviously the nagging injuries show up at this time every year but there has been what 5+ ACL injuries, Ruptured Achilles, a few carted off the field, etc.

Injuries happen every year. Can't prevent them.

ACL injuries have had nothing to do with pads on or off.

This. I would need to see actual numbers before jumping to conclusions.

Tom Brady leaves Patriots practice after injuring knee

Also in the article:

Brady's injury -- severity unknown -- comes at a time when the NFL is experiencing a spike in ACL injuries.

In the first two-plus weeks of training camp, there have been at least 15 season-ending knee injuries. Even Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL's Competition Committee, told USA TODAY Sports, he thinks "there have been more ACL injuries than ever."

According to Edgeworth Economics, which recently conducted an independent analysis of the data provided by the NFL Players Association, ACL injuries are on the rise, although the research doesn't differentiate between a sprain and a tear.

For instance, in the 2004 preseason, there were 13 ACL injuries. That number jumped to 24 in last year's preseason, and it appears the 2013 preseason could surpass that.

"The majority of ACL tears are non-contact tears," said orthopedist Neal ElAttrache from the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles. "The non-contact ACL tear results when you're doing something that your brain hasn't planned or patterned, so you misstep. Or, unexpectedly, a blocker gets pushed into you with your foot planted."

Everyone knows there is being in Shape and being in Football Shape. The less Football drills that are run with other Football players, the more chance of non contact injuries.

I can help a Football player practice in the offseason, but I am not trying to get better. I am just helping this Football player. When two people are trying to get better while Practicing it is a Much different experience.

My hair-brain theory is that players are getting off the juice because the writing is on the wall with that.

That is a reasonable possibility.

This is just a guess for the Colts, so don't build the scaffold and secure the rope for me just yet, but we seem to have a lot of much larger and stronger people fighting for roster spots this year. We have been fortunate not to have any season ending injuries yet, but the number of players dinged up seems unusually high.
