If A Rod announces his retirement today.....totally hypothetical.....is the guy a Hall of Fame inductee?

19 seasons.

.330BA

1950RBIs

647 HRs

Or is the cloud of Roid / PED usage going to for ever taint him?

Need a little clarification...

Is the question "Should he be a Hall of Famer"? Or "Will he make the Hall of Fame?" Those are two questions with distinctly different answers.

Should he? Of course. PEDs or not, he's still be one of the 5 best players of his generation.

Will he? Maybe but probably not. The gang of hypocrites known as the BBWAA certainly will never vote for him, but he'll have a shot to get in through the Veterans Committee if he makes friends with the right guys, or if the general view of PED use softens with time.

For each fan do they believe he gets into the hall?

IMO if he does it will be through the Veterans committee. He has burned some bridges with the media and the PEDs will only further the national view of him. If MLB hits him with a lifetime ban he sits with Pete Rose signing autographs across the street from Cooperstown.

I think they need to let all those guys into the Hall if their numbers back it. Im suspicious of everyone that played from about 1985-present so I dont see nayway to discern whos numbers are legit and whos arent. Seems to me that alot of people getting busted for roids now are pitchers so if the same was true the whole time then I dont really see a huge advantage for hitters during that span ( if you are claiming PEDs as the main reason the numbers happened). Also even if you are going to take PEDs into account you need to determine how much they played a role in a guys stats. To me guys like Bonds and Clemens were HOFers way way before the roids claim even remotely came up, now a guy like Sosa is a different story.

Were they dead to you in 1998? I see you're a Lions fan. Are the majority of players on the Lions' roster dead to you?

Was Gary Sheffield dead to him in 2007 and 2008? I seem to remember tons of number "3" jerseys and chef hats and cheering whenever he hit a homer when I was at Comerica those two years. Was Peralta dead to him when he hit that walk-off homer against the Red Sox in late June? Of course he wasn't.

Is A-Rod a HOFer? Duh. Will he be? Maybe when he's old and gray.

Even if that is what it comes to, he's not necessarily "banned" in the sense Rose is. MLB can put him on "indefinite suspension" and not place him on their "permanently ineligible" list, where Rose presently resides. We'll have to see how it plays out.

Players on the permanently ineligible list cannot appear on any Hall of Fame ballot. Please note the wording of that... "cannot appear on a ballot". A voter can still vote for them. They just can't appear on the ballot. Pete Rose can get into the Hall of Fame, he'd just have to get enough write-in votes, which is just about impossible. Then it becomes a matter of other questions. Is he ineligible for write-ins because he's been retired for over 20 years? Did his eligibility clock never begin because of his banishment?

Furthermore, this rule is the rule of the Hall of Fame. MLB does not own or control the Hall of Fame, or set its rules of eligibility. Pete Rose could remain on the permanently ineligible list and still get into the Hall of Fame if the Hall were to simply change their rule and allow him to appear on the ballot.

I agree with most of this. You can't ignore history, and you're never going to know all the names, so you can't scapegoat the few guys who have been thrown under the bus, and you certainly can't assume a guy is guilty without any real evidence (like Bagwell). The players should be evaluated by the merits of their accomplishments in the timeframe they achieved them in.

Is anyone actually naïve enough to believe there isn't a guy already in the Hall who didn't use something? And I mean more than greenies. We all know plenty of HOFers used greenies. I mean steroids. There's someone in there who juiced. It would be foolish to think otherwise.

I can't believe somebody is asking this question. He's a cheater, therefore he will never get into the Hall of Fame.

I can't believe somebody is asking this question. Kevin Brown and Ken Caminiti were PED users, therefore the Padres cheated to get their 1998 National League pennant.

Like every team, they had quite a few. They also had Greg Vaughn, Wally Joyner and Jim Leyritz on that club.

Well in that case, I'm certain DaBoltsNIsles long ago started a petition to have the Padres vacate their 1998 NL pennant, since he finds cheating so distasteful. Where can I sign?

Neither are in the Hall of Fame either. Andy Pettite was on that Yankees team so they should give back their title right? If a player is found to have cheated they don't belong in the Hall of Fame period. I don't care who they are or who they played for. I've never defended Caminiti or Brown for what they did & never will. I don't want Yasmani Grandal on the Padres & don't feel bad for him one bit now that he's injured. I hope it takes a very long time for him to recover. At least long enough for Austin Hedges to take the #1 catching spot on the Padres.

So should the Hall of Fame remove players already in the Hall who were known to have cheated?

Sure, if it's been proven. Whether they do or not is up to them. I really don't care at this point. I just don't want today's cheaters who only care about how much money they can make rather than playing the game the right way to get in. They made their choice. They don't belong in the Hall of Fame.

I'm sure somewhere in the Hall of Fame it say "San Diego Padres, 1998 National League Champions." Do you want all those references removed, since that championship was obtained with the help of cheaters?

Ok. Someone let Gaylord Perry, Don Sutton, Ty Cobb, and a great number of others that they're no longer welcome in the Hall.

How about other sports? Dyou have similar problems with players in other sports cheating by using PEDs? Because then you'd probably have to stop watching the Chargers since the majority of the roster is on something. Should Junior Seau have his number un-retired? I'd be absolutely stunned if he didn't use steroids or another type of PED at some point in his career.

Why do you begrudge these guys trying to make as much money as they can, by the way?
